    Exploring the B8 bixenons (pics)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi what’s up guys. Those who know me know I am a little addicted to audi lighting mods. So I couldn’t resist to put my hands on some B8 ecodes just for learning the new stuff. The package arrived yesterday – what an excitement. I think there are more gasoline heads like me out there with the same questions so I decided to start this exploring thread just for sharing some information.

What’s new? What did they do better?
First impression: sweet! They have nearly the same size as the B7 lights but appear a little smaller due to the dark design. The tabs are installed with screws by factory. No worries if one breaks. Well done audi.

    Beams:
One clear lens projector for lowbeams and highbeams. One signal bulb with reflector behind the LED stripe. One LED stripe. No DRLs anymore. No citylights. Possibly a separate amber light for the US-specs. The signal bulb is obviously a new slim type which I have never seen before (pricey??).

    Technic:
The LED stripe with little reflectors around are surely an eye catcher. Remembering good old B5 and B6 times the main difference between ecodes and US-specs. is back: The ecodes are clear cornered while the US-specs. come with an amber reflector installed.

The manufacturer one again is Automotive lighting (B5 and B6 was valeo) and guess what? They use a xenon ballast made by Mitsubishi. The ballast is pretty small and lightweight. What’s the reason for the third dummy ballast mount on the bottom? Possibly another ballast for curvelight housings? We’ll see.

    D3S !
The headlights use D3S xenon bulbs which nearly look like D1S from the first view. You can identify D3S by the green insulator. D3S bulbs are HG-free and therefore much better to recycle. Attention: D1S and D3S are not interchangable (D1S works with 85volts and D3S with 42volts). Result: No more 6000°K aftermarket upgrade bulbs…

    LED stripe
Damn! There is a second hole next to the ballast place. There are two plugs visible. One plug with 4 wires goes to the LEDs and one plug with 3 wires obviously goes into the ballast. 2 ballasts each side makes the whole headlight expensive. Thumbs down! I assume this LED ballast mainly contains resistors for the LEDs and a little circuit to power down the stripe a bit when the turnsignal is flashing. To make to confusion complete this second ballast is not made my Mitsubishi but by AL.

    Bixenon retrofit?
Still possible. Once again the halogen and bixenon main plugs are different but there is an adapter availible (nearly the same one as the B7 adapter harness). Recoding the vehicle to xenon modus is surely neccessary.

    Possible mods:
    1. Clear corner mod. Is surely possible since the lens looks removable.
    2. Eliminating the power-down function for the LED stripe when the vehicle is cornering.
I could think of using the bixenons without the second ballast by installing the correct resistors in between the wires and use a blind cover for the ballast position.

I would be in the need of another damaged housing where I can extract the Led stripe. I am very curious which voltage they need and how they are wired up internally. My actual housings were too expensive and look too good to wreck.

    To be continued…

    Jens

well here in the states we still have A4s with halogens so about you xenon upgrade comment, they can still use aftermarket kits. About the LED ballast, thats basically a big resistor is what im thinking and i wonder if that can be used with the aftermarket devil-eyes?

No real idea. Don't we have H7 fogs mostly?

Great thread, Jens. Thanks for this. So I'm curious, how much for a pair of E-Codes in USD? Just the housings, no bulbs or ballasts...hopefully they'll be plug-and-play.

I know that the S6 and the R8 and even the S5 have leds that are brighter than the B8 a4, so is there something that can be done to brighten them, I heard that they are all wired together so if one goes out they all do so I dont wanna mess with it unless theres a deffinite way to do it.... also, do you think that the clear corner mod will be the same as the B6 and B7 where u u can drill it, or is it back to the old oven trick....

there is a percentage range in VAGCOM that you can change to make them brighter.

Correct. The asymetrical beams always point to to the pedestrians and not to the vehicles on the other side of the road. Some projectors have a little leveller on the sides to adjust them to an even beam _____ (aka tourist position for england visitors).

Thank you sir . The currency conversion bumps up and down this year and the headlights are still pretty new on the market. So there is a high demand in europe as well. Last but not least it depends on luck and the condition (any tabs broken, any scratches at the lens?). A used set of housings in decent condition should cost around $550 - $700.

Very sadly they won't show up in the audizine classifieds next year, right?

    Jens

PS: Plug&Play? Good question. I am still doing my homework and keep learning...

I thought LEDs last forever? I would check the wiring and/or connectors for a proper fit. Definitely annoying with owning such a new car.

    Hey Jens -

Did you happen to notice if the amber reflector could be popped off and re-installed (how it was help in)? I think it may look a bit naked without it (judging by what is under it), so wondering if taking it off, lamin-x or spray tinting it, and re-installing may be an option....

    Thanks,

    Hi,
    interesting question.

The only chance to get access is removing the lens. It is held with a few clips all around (exactly as the B7 had). If they have used the same sealant it should be possible to open the housing.

I need a third cheap&damaged housing. . The two ones I got are mint.

Yeah...I think removing the lenses are a given. I thought you already had it open and could just have a quick look to see if that reflector popped off, my mistake! That first pic looked like the lense was removed....it's TOO clean!

I can't figure out how to remove the D3S bulb. I want to check if there's such a lever. I know the B7 e-codes had it though.

what is the temp (ex. 7000K) rating on those D1S's? i think they r 4300k but not sure. what is a good conversion kit for my fog lights to match the low-beams (what #K to match D1S)?? If it is 4300k should i do 4300k or the 5000k? Thanks

the US version may have different projectors.

The tell tale sign is when you look at the lens, there is a "line" going across it. THis is a characteristic of what is categorized as "Bosch e46 bixenons".

Im going to take the car in for a Headlight replacement once I get back to FL . Supposedly this is the only way to correct a burned LED.

I have heard some audiziners already have some plans on this ....
