is it true that having different brand tires (although the same size i.e. 255x30x19) can destroy the tranny on a quattro?

If the rotational dimensions of the tire & wheel combo are the same, how is the driveline going to know the difference?

BTW: your significant other switched out your favorite peanut butter on the last PB&J sandwhich for the stuff that was on sale - but it's the same flavor; so did it change anything?

    +/- same principal.

Re: different tire brands on a quattro

i got my car aligned and that was the comment by the folks who aligned it. they dont sell tires so they werent giving me biased advice. that is why i asked the question, to get some verifiable advice from people who know better (hence why i posted in the tech forums and not the other forums). they said that it happened to one of their customers who had different tire brands and their tranny wore down in 5k miles because the different companies have different specs on their tires regardless of the size, etc.

i didnt need a smart ass response, i need a professional opinion.

It shouldn't be a problem so long as the tires have the same specs. I would worry about traction, especially in wet, because different tires offer different performance/traction in various conditions.

As long as the tires are within 3/32" of tread depth of each other, the differentials should be fine. We recommend against mixing tire models as different tread patterns will shed water (and resist hydroplaning) differently , and the different rubber compounds will have differnent levels of grip so handling can be unpredictable.

Hmmm... my gf just bought a CPO A6. I'm almost certain the front right tire is new, while the left isn't (probably just enough to pass the cpo requirements); don't remember the rears. Is this something to worry about?
