    Bought an '06 B7 2.0T today...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Well my pops did. He got rid of his Lexus and picked up a 2006 B7 2.0T .....FWD. Oh well. I don't know if it's CVT or not. All I know is when I put it on + / - it shows 7 speed. So does it have CVT? WTF is CVT anyway and how does it compare to regular tiptronic?

Car has 64K miles. A tad high, but he got a good deal, so can't complain. Anything he should lookout for at this time? Car runs nice and strong and I don't notice any boost loss or anything.

One question for you guy: By the foglights, where the airducts for the brake cooling (I'm assuming that's what it's for) are, are there supposed to be grills or what? Can someone please show me a pic cuz I don't know. Thanks!

If you are describing the area I think you are, there is not any mesh or anything near the fog

congrats! at the mileage your Dad is at I would start thinking of changing the timing belt. As for the fog light area it sounds like you have a non-sline A4. Some have mesh some dont

Sounds like you do in fact have the CVT with the 7-speed. I have the same set-up on my '08. Has a Drive and Sport mode and the "faux-manual" mode to right of Drive. I love the close gear ratios of the 7-speed and, when light-footing it around 65 mph, I see in the ballpark of 35 mpg. Great for me since I drive 120 miles a day.
I don't know if Wiki's answer speaks true to our Audi tranny, but read here:

take a pic of that mesh area, you are referring too. Most b7's dont have mesh for foglight areas, I have never seen one stock (correct me if I am wrong). What we do have are grills, if your dad has a non sline, they are pretty much affixed to the bumper, sline they can remove it.

And your dad does have CVT, same type roughly as engine from the b6 A4. CVT has 7 gears as apposed to 6 for Quattro transmission (Auto or 6Speed). It is tiptronic, just different tranny compared to Quattro.

Lastly, do some research on that car, make sure it had the 55k service and is caught up to date with maintenance. I believe timing belt or chain (not sure what we have) needs to be replaced around this time and not covered under audi warranty. By now, coils should have been replaced, oil, etc..

P.s. This car doesnt compare to your s4 =)

Aren't the ducts next to the fog lights for the side mount intercoolers and not the brakes?

lol there are side mounts intercoolers? COOL!

Yeah, this isn't my S4 by a mile, but it's for my parents so that's cool :)

What's the issue with the CVT? That shit prone to break? BTW what's special about it?

Looking at the carfax, it looks like the car was in for service at the dealer at 55K miles. Can I call up my Audi dealer and ask them to look in their system to see if the 55k service was done? I don't know if they're all linked up like Mercedes, but I'm assuming that they are.

I think I may get a filler front plate for my pops too... what else should I do...

OHHH I got the XM tuner from my B6 S4 left over... I wanna put it in. How the hell do I do that???

    Thanks

The CVT isn't as robust as the manual or Tiptronic gearboxes, and a lot of people have had them fail, lol so yes, that shit prone to break. I don't know what it is about them, but there are threads here and on AW about it that gets into more details. Most times its not covered under warranty, and its a good chunk of change to replace.

And yes, the Audi dealers are linked together, so you can get info from one, even if the car wasn't serviced there.

The tuner plugs into the cables in the truck left side box. Just open it and pull out the upper black plastic and plug in the tuner

I'm not so sure if that's true in the B7 world. It seems, just from doing some forum searching, that it was much more of an issue with the B6 CVT's. I'll keep looking around for info (as I just bought an 07 CVT and have a vested interested in knowing all I can), but I've seen lots of folks with chips and mods on them so they must not be too crappy. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Part of the common factor with the B6 failures was the amount of miles (generally 70k+), and I don't think many B7's are into that mileage range yet, so that may be why there are less factors. AFAIK, the trans is the same, so I don't see why anything would be different. But if you do have more information, please share it with us.

Well let's hope this tranny doesn't take a shit any time soon. Should I invest in a 2500 bucks warranty they tried to sell me or not?

And the car is bone stock.

Timing belt isn't supposed to be replaced until 110K miles.

Service schedules are available here: http://www.bentleypublishers.com/tech/audi

Originally it was to be replaced at 75K, but they've updated the schedule.

I rag out my cvt tranny every day, and the only thing I have been able to break in two years has been a cv joint. This tranny is pretty robust if you ask me, It has handled more torque that any BT A4 has ever put down. However that being said I think im too borderline.

This thread mentions the pump being different in the B7 . . .

Not that it's gospel - can anyone verify?

Well that does help put my mind at ease a bit... I don't fancy dropping $2500 on some aftermarket warranty.... the B7 is rather solid...or is it?
