if its really not tight.....use ure hand and turn it...make sure u have a oil pan or sumtin under it so u dont spill oil everywhere. turn it slowly until its almost loose then watch the oil spil out. if u cant turen it by hand theres a tool called the oil filter wrench its about 6-7 bux.

i loosen the filter, then put a plastic shopping bag around it and just finish unscrewing it. the filter will fall into the bag and avoid a huge mess!

    Re: removing oil filter

Grab one of those semi big ziplock bags, or basically a ziplock bag at least a little bigger than the filter and place it underneath and over the filter, use the bag to unscrew the filter by hand and the oil spillage should be pretty much contained. I usually remove it through the top by moving my coolant reservoir out of the way, but this method works fine from underneath aswell.

I wouldn't bother with anything thin like a shopping bag, they tend to collapse and stick very easily to the filter.. sometimes making a bigger mess than you would have without one. Others might have better luck, but I can be an oaf at times. A big ziplock bag is perfect, keeping the filter at least halfway in the bag so that no oil can escape from the top and all the spillage falls to the bottom half.

    Good luck and Godspeed.

you remove your coolant reservoir? i can usually fit my mobile 1 filter through the gap next to the reservoir just by jiggling it a little

    Re: removing oil filter

When removing the filter without spilling any of the oil anywhere I like the extra room. I could do it without, but it only takes me an extra 30-60 seconds. Putting a new filter on jiggling works just fine since I can't really make much of a mess with a new filter. Whatever works.

    Re: removing oil filter

first drain the oil and then from the top of the car unscrew the screw holding down the coolant resivor. and move the resivor over and then undew the filter with your hands and bring it up from the top.

there will still be a mess but less then if you where to go from the bottom.

    good luck

    Re: removing oil filter

I usually take a piece of cardboard, such as the box from the oil quarts, and tear it in half then fold it so it is sort of like a water slide to the oil pan waiting underneath.

Bag might actually be easier though. Never thought of that

I cut a windshield washer fluid bottle in half. And just put it under it. I resuse it everytime.
