    noise from transmission? HELP PLEASE!

So i was just driving to the bar and i pulled out of a traffic light and i heard a weird clicking noise.
I have about 110k on it its a 1.8TQMS the wierd thing is it drives perfectly fine like there is nothing wrong. The clutch has never slipped on it at all and I never launch it.
So this noise while driving, if in gear and mainting a speed you dont hear it at all, if I downshift to start slowing down you start hearing a fast clicking noise that slows down as you decelerate. If I put it into neutral and just slow down then when I am just about stopped you can hear a pretty loud grinding/rubbing sound until I come to a complete stop and it stops. The car doesnt make any noise at idel (like flywheel chatter).
So basically when I am accelerating it makes no noise until I go to switch gears and it makes a clicking noise til I get into the next gear.

I have NO idea what this is but I would really love some help.

After reading your post a little more thoroughly, you may not have the same issue I was having. You can do a little diagnosis to get a better idea. I immediately thought I had spun a rod bearing so I called a flat bed and took it to my shop. After taking the time to hear where it is coming from, you can get a much better idea. If you can stick your head under the car a bit, have someone depress the clutch pedal and release a few times to see if the sound changes. In my case it didn't change much since the broken pressure plate spins at the same rpm as the crank obviously but I could tell the difference in noise was coming from the bell housing. Give it a shot, I hope it helps.

Yeah i will check it out tommorrow a little more thorough. It happened at like 10:30 and it was dark obviously. My first thought was flywheel as well, but then it didnt make the noise at all when sitting still with the clutch in or out. If it was the flywheel it would still make this noise even when sittin still wouldnt it? I am not great around transmissions and mechanical shit, I am a body man, I make cars look good, not run good. hahaha

Think i have it narrowed down to my right drive axle, i just did my left one, and now the right one is blown out i think. I guess accelerated on that hard right turn and the bump i hit was enough to blow it out.

Does that sound like it could be the problem to anyone else here?

On a B5? Age-related failure, maybe accelerated by youthful exuberance is more likely.

Bumps rarely if ever "blow" a CV. I take it you mean it has failed when you say that, as opposed to the CV boot has failed. A failed boot will eventually cause the grease to leak out, and then you get clicking, and then it screechs and locks up. In any case, someone is telling you internet legends. In all likelihood, it (and the LH side) just wore out. It happens. Replace them in pairs, and save yourself some setup time.

Yeah, what I meant was it was pretty much on its way out, and that acceleration under the hard right turn just took the last bit of life out of it.
