    trans fluid change

I have been meaning to post that I completed the fluid change finally in my S4 at around 65K miles. I did the rear diff and trans. For the trans I used Amsoil GL-5 synthetic gear oil. I have had it in for close to 1K miles now. I noticed that when first driving the car when cold (it has been near 40 overnight, although in the garage still upper 40's or so) there is some increased effort to get the shifter into gear and when shifting. But within a few minutes that goes away. And the stock fluid had the same tendancy, but I think the amsoil is slightly thicker when cold so does it a bit worse. But overall shifting is noticably smoother once warmed up. So I am happy with the trade off, and also with the price of Amsoil vs. dealer pricing for the OEM fluid which is nearly double the price (all of which is likely profit margin).

And FYI - it took just about exactly 1 gallon. Which is handy, because Amsoil sells the gear oil in gallon jugs.
(heh heh - he said "jugs" - heh heh)

I highly recommend swapping fluids somewhere around 60K miles - it is not much of a job at all, and your expensive quattro parts will thank you.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but the actual Tip-tronic gear shifters are just on the surface, and are not linked to the transmission mechanically, but rather electronics. I could be totally wrong.. bc how would you put the car is neutral if the battery was dead, if it is all electronic. not sure.

    Re: trans fluid change

I've heard a lot of people like RedLine for cold weather and they say it eliminates harsh gear engagement.

I have a question about filling up. Here's what the manual says:
    Oil level with transmission code
    GYH

Specified value: The oil level is
    correct when the transmission is
filled up to the lower edge of filler
    hole.

Oil level with all other transmission
    codes

Specified value: Oil level 2 ± 1 mm
below upper edge of filler hole.
How is that even possible to fill up above the bottom edge?

Uh... his car has a manual transmission. Re-read the OP. Also, in the situation where a battery was dead on a Tip car you would just press the brake pedal with the key in the ignition and use that cute little lever between the front seats that has a gear shift pattern next to it.
    A couple of Audi's later...

You are selecting the gears threw the shifter. PRND that is cable driven. The tip stuff is ELE driven.

As for N when the batt is dead the brake interlock that keeps the car in park is disabled. You need constant power to keep the car in P no power you can move the shifter to what ever position you want. P.M. me if this was a bad explanation of this

I came here from Germany in the 6th grade. I could not read or write a lick of English. I am working to get better. Thanks and sorry. I always try to edit my posts for the best grammar and easiest reading.
