Exclamation DRL Function (Electricians Chime in Plz)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok so I want to be able to get my Fog lights to turn on when I want them too... I used to have my car VAGGED to Canada mode so that the fogs were always on. I like it, except from the fact the interior lights were always on too (and the navi screen would be in "night" mode and the map was impossible to read) so I returned it to USA mode. People have posted various ways of making DRL without Canada mode (involves cutting wires and pulling out this and that) but im not interested in that because there always on... I want to be able to controll my DRL's. So instead of cutting into my dash or some looney thing like that I want to buy the B7 light control board (pic below) that has the DRL knob. I want that when I turn that knob, the fogs turn on... When I turn it the other way, the fogs will turn off. Simple as that... I dont know though how to get this idea of mine in the works... Where do I tap in for power? Where do I run the wires to the nearest fog light harness? Do I need a relay? What is a relay?

-- See im full of all these questions, and need help learning how to do this!

This is currently my Light control board: (it has the coming home feature, and AUTO lights)

This is what I am going to buy.. It comes with B7's and the Audi guy told me it fits the spot where mine is, its just a matter of running the correct wires to it.

    Thanks!

Re: DRL Function (Electricians Chime in Plz)

As an aside, do you know how much that part goes for? I'm also looking at doing something similar.

*EDIT*My local dealer says it can be had for $81.40, but keep in mind you may need a new headlight switch as well to get all of the features that car has (note it has the Auto position).

Ah. We 1.8 wankers get screwed again!

I have no auto position and I have a 2005. Actually, I kinda like the non-auto setup given my experience with some GM auto light systems, but I should know better than to compare our cars to anything made by the 'bloated 3'.

According to the wiring diagrams, the fog light switch is powered from the load reduction relay, for independent fogs. "non us equipent".. Where as with the US setup, the fog light switch is powered by the headlight low beam circuit.
This is why the fogs only work with the low beams ON on US equipment setups, where as the fog light switch is powered directly from the load reduction relay on non US setups, so anytime the fog light switch is closed sends power to the fogs.

BTW, a relay is only a switch. The switch in the dash tells the relay to switch on or off.

Ok so could I take the wire from the headlight switch that goes to the fogs, tap into it with a wire that goes to the DRL switch... Then for power for the DRL switch goto the fuse of the fogs and tap into it there?? That way when I turn the DRL switch to ON the power would go from the fuse to the switch, from the switch to the tapped wire on the headlight switch and down into the fogs??

Re: DRL Function (Electricians Chime in Plz)

I can't find the DRL switch in the Bentley wiring diagrams. The only switch I can find, is the Fog Light switch in the headlight switch (E23).

For US/CAN spec., The "2/XR" terminal on the headlight switch, is the power supply to the E23 Fog light switch, that feeds the fog lights. The "2/XR" terminal receives power from the Central Electric Control Module, Terminal T23/23.

For non US/CAN spec., The "2/XR" terminal receives power from the Load Reduction Relay, terminal #2.

With the fog light switch power feed from the T23/23 terminal of the CECM, the fog light switch is only "hot" or energized when the headlight low beams are ON. So, even if the CECM is coded for independent fogs, when the switch is ON with the headlights OFF, there is no power supplied to the E23 fog light switch, so the fogs don't work without the headlights ON.

With the non US/CAN spec., The E23 Fog light switch is powered directly from the Load Reduction Relay J59, terminal #2. This provides power to the E23 fog light switch whenever the ignition switch is ON. Therefore, the fogs will be ON when the E23 fog light switch is ON, provided the CECM is coded for a country where the independent fogs are allowed.

Now, in the case of the separate DRL switch, I believe that it must be in parallel with the E23 Fog light switch. Therefore, it should be connected to the Load Reduction Relay, J59. terminal #2,(+vbatt, ign ON,) and the CECM at terminal T32b/28. (Load, Fog lights)

Do you have access to the wiring diagrams? The above will make better sense if you can refer to the wiring diagrams.

The Load Reduction Relay is under the drivers dash, above the pedal cluster, and is the right most relay in the horizontal row, and is labeled "370". The CECM, is directly below that row of relays. So, the wires to be added, (if not already present but unconnected now,) need to run from the LLR, up to the DRL switch, then back down to the CECM. The wiring, should use OEM harness connectors and wire terminals, available from the dealer.

Let me know if you need additional details on the above description.

whats the CECM? Do you have screen shots of the diagram?? That would help out a lot so I can make a DIY on this?

SUPER OLDDDD thread...but I was wanting to do this exact same thing. Add the B7-style DRL switch to my B6.

I already have auto lights, and the coming-home feature.

If I had a schematic to look at it might be easier to figure out.

Diagnosticator- were you looking in the B6 or B7 headlight schematics? I think that separate DRL switch feature was only on the 07+ B7's.

'68 vw beetle - way slower than both, but it has 4 wheel drive and a chevy 5.3 LSx V8 in the back
