    Temp Gauge acting weird???

    2004 Audi S4 6-speed, 33,800 miles on the odo...

Sometimes it doesn't work, sometimes it will be in the middle, then drop to cold while driving. Drive for 30 minutes, still shows cold. Turn off car, start back up, and it shows the temp in the middle of the gauge? I don't know where to start with this problem. Is it bad to keep driving the car like this?

    Re: Temp Gauge acting weird???

^^^ Thats a good start, I will try that first.

I have found on another forum, that it was the gauge itself. That person said replacing the gauge in the cluster fixed the problem.

    Re: Temp Gauge acting weird???

I never got around to installing the sensor... It's in a tight spot behind the engine. When I tried to install it 2 weeks ago, I couldn't find it. I will try again this weekend when I install my exhaust.

    Re: Temp Gauge acting weird???

I tried to replace my coolant temp sensor and gave up. Its on the back of the engine at about 12 o'clock and has a clip that secures it in place. Its in an awkward spot, you might be able to get it out, but putting back on would be a task. I'm sure there are people out there who have done it, but it isn't as easy as it looks. I would also recommend that you get an extra clip cuz many people drop them while trying to remove them or reinstall.

Funny you mention getting a new clip... It costs more than the sensor...$40.

    Re: Temp Gauge acting weird???

Well, I replaced the sensor on Saturday. What a B***c that was, took me almost 5 hours. It DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM... The wiring looked good, and so did the sensor I replaced...

I found this thread about replacing the gauge inside the cluster.

    http://www.audi-forums.com/b6-forum/...at-issues.html

I've searched, and can't find a replacment gauge on the internet. Anyone know where to find this? Buying a used cluster seems cheaper, if Audi doesn't charge me an arm, leg, and firstborn to adapt it to the car...

    Re: Temp Gauge acting weird???

You should be able to adapt it with that handy vagcom cable and a few write ups. I'll be curious to know if THAT fixes your problem, because I have this same exact damn problem, and also same miles. weird

    Re: Temp Gauge acting weird???

If that didn't help, I would next look at the thermostat before you start looking at the replacing the gauge. Its probably cheaper than a new gauge.

I thought about that, but I don't see how that would affect the gauge? Yesterday, I drove the car for 30 minutes. The gauge never went above the quarter mark. I shut the car off for 10 minutes, started it back up, and the gauge was at the half-way mark. It stayed there the rest of the drive home.

I am also having the very same problem. My CEL light came on from it. Here is what I got on my VAG scan.

    18613 - Performance Malfunction in Cooling System P2181 - 008 - Implausible Signal

The coolant level is fine and the car runs normally. It's off to the dealership soon, hopefully to be repaired under warranty.

I haven't changed the thermostat yet. I have been following this thread:

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=269661

Seems like replacing the alternator is the fix.
