EDL: uses sensors and works with the ESP to transfer power to the wheel with more grip in either the front or rear axles.

Re: Is EDL active if the ESP is off?

There was a thread litterlly a few days ago about this, I explained everything... For some strange reason, in american forums people talk about ESP and no body has any clue about it but make out they do.

    brake down.

    ESP ON -> Everything On.

ESP Off -> ESP off, everything else on (ABS, Corner Brake Control, Brake Biasing, EDL)

This is a good thing, if those turned off, you would have 50/50 brake bias and always lock up the rear.

EDL is very good, its doesnt take any power away and increases grip, its basically a cheating way of getting a limited slip diff.

Re: Is EDL active if the ESP is off?

There's some indication that at certain limits, extreme opposite lock ala rallying, the ESP kicks in anyway, even if turned off. In the snow, I drive with ESP off.

I haven't been able to push the car hard enough in a formal test to determine if this is true. But some half-hearted attempts around town (after these big dumps of snow) have surprised me and now (having just read about a perhaps-permanent ESP intervention mode) it starts to make sense.

I've had 20+ years of rally experience and rallied AWD turbo cars (albeit W/O so much electronic assitance) and know what to do with them and how they behave. Just trying to understand what the B6 A4 can and can't do as a road car.

When ESP is "off" - is it off for good? Or does it still kick in at say full opposite lock, or with left foot braking to induce oversteer, etc?

    Thanks,

    RK

It will come back on momentarily if you tap the brakes.

Re: Is EDL active if the ESP is off?

Hmmm - kinda crappy - no left-foot braking to balance the car or induce a drift. Guess the ghost of Michelle Mouton no longer walks the halls of Audi engineering.

Makes sense though - I guess the system assumes that an average driver will hit the brakes in panic and the system interprets that as a call for help.

Too bad - but as ever - I sit firmly outside the realm of the "normal" driver. : )

Re: Is EDL active if the ESP is off?

The flick is used in certain cituations - not all. Long, opening corners are better entered into with a quick dab of the brake (with throttle on for modulation and to avoid understeer) to set up the drift - you then hold it there modulating the drift angle with the throttle - but also sometimes the brakes.

The flick is great (and fun!) for tighter corners - 3's or tighter (in pace-note speak).
