    Pulled the GT35r out.

Removed the compressor housing, looks good.

Pulled the turbo out of the exhaust housing and WOW.

There is no shaft play. I am really suprised I was able to run 10.5, traps up to 136 mph and make the power it made on the dyno on saturday. Oh well, now have to talk to FP to see if they can replace the exhaust wheel at the same time they do the HTA upgrade or if I will have to just buy a whole new turbo.

Do you know how your turbine fins turned out like such? Any thought what got into the exhaust housing? Also, about how many miles on that turbo? Thanks!

Hard to say how many miles are on the turbo, but it went into my car before the 1.8t Challenge back in 2004.

Not sure what went thru the turbo but my plugs dont stay in my car very long and I have never pulled out a damaged plug.

should we reiterate the high EGT discussion from the B6 A4 thread?

So you're going with an HTA, or is that a cover story to something F-in amazing?

Damage doesn't look like it is from high EGT's since it is jagged not melted. Something could have gone thru the whole engine and then thru the turbo. I mean this could have happened long time ago without me even knowing it since the car has always made good power.

The plan up to just now was to ship it out to FP to have it upgraded to the HTA86, but now I am waiting to hear back from them about this damage before I make up my mind what I do. I already have someone that wants to buy my whole setup if it includes a HTA3586r.

to say you put down 550whp on a broken turbo is pretty damn cool.

    What he said.

as far as the damage, I don't know. I've never really had the opportunity to have an issue like that and be able to fully diagnose it.
That's not something you normally see in a dealership setting. And I definitely have limited experience with B5's and 35R's (or BAT's) anyways.

    I just thought I'd ask.

Mike do the HTA son, it would cost maybe a little shy of $1k to have the exhaust wheel and HTA done but with that you would have to buy a plain GT35 anyway

friend just sent his gt35 off to FP, he had bad damage on the compressor similar to your exhaust side. FP couldn't do the upgrade due to the damage. Hopefully on yours you can still do you upgrade. intersted to see what the word is.

Waiting for Mr. Sean to chime in, I remembered his turbo having wheel damage of some sorts before sending it out to the FP boys...

His center section or housing must have been damaged, because FP just replaces the comressor wheel and machines out the compressor housing.

Well the edges of the blades are bent backwards, almost like something got jammed in there and the wheels just kept hitting it. Either way the turbo is going to get replaced.

    Re: Pulled the GT35r out.

Mike, are the chunks out of the edges lined up from fin to fin? If something was in the housing, it would have to be fixed pretty well for those fins to hit it over and over and over... OR, the air pressure was keeping something forced to the outside wall of the chamber, but that doesn't sound likely?

There is an interesting colour gradation from the centre of the fin towards the 'torn' edges.... I guess we'll never know... but I would expect a loose 'something' to grenade the turbo, bit just rough the fin edges.

    Can't wait for the update!

Well doesn't doesn't take long to do damage like that while the turbo is spinning at 150,000 rpm.

Depends. If its the HTA I will, but if I jump to BW it will most likely be a different size a/r.

When will the new turbo and manifold go in? Are you going to have this repaired and then sell it or is it even worht it? Can you save this as a back up in case something happens to the new turbo?

hmm. looks like something definitely got in there. most likely you werent paying attention at a track day, swerved into the other lane, and your engine happily ate an entire honda. its understandable, since your turbo is bigger than a b16

ive seen this many times with compressors, but not with the turbine. i would say do a compression test to make sure if it did go through the entire engine, it didnt mess up the valves also. one thing that also comes to mind is possibly a piece of welding slag broke off the inside of the manifold and did the deed. i look forward to seeing you achieve BAFT or BAMFT status soon. peace.

I always check the compression, did it before the day I ran 10.5. If the CR was bad I dont think the car would have made the power it did on saturday.

Does the turbine housing have any damage? Good thing you pulled it out now so it didn't grenade itself down the line due to an unbalanced wheel. Not bad for 4 years of use on the track and dyno.

Dont see any damage on the inside of the housing. I think the damage happened long time ago, causing the edges to bend back and then over time ate down to what it looks like now. The boost curve and power band hasn't changed since 034 rebuilt the engine and retuned the car almost 2 years ago.

If FP isn't willing to replace the exhaust wheel during the HTA rebuild, I will just end up going straight to the twin scroll setup. I sent pics of the turbo to FP and Geoff at Full-race, already heard back from Geoff and still waiting to hear back from FP. So either way something will be going back into the car after the cage is finished.

    Re: Pulled the GT35r out.

Well heard from FP, cant fix it so if I want to HTA I have to buy a new CHRA or buy a whole new turbo. So at this time things are up in the air as to what I will do next. The GT35r will most likely just end up going back into the car till FR is ready to build me my custom twin scroll setup.
