    Testpipe or exhaust?

I want a bit more performance without making the car sound too loud.

As far as performance goes are the gains similar with just a test pipe vs just replacing the 2 rear mufflers (roughly 10HP)?

    Re: Testpipe or exhaust?

You could pick up a Stasis exhaust, it will yield the extra 10-15hp and the sound is perfect if you dont want it too loud. Not to mention there is virtually NO drone.

A testpipe will be too loud and you will not pass emissions

    Thanks

Ya but for me (not to sound arrogant) this is my winter car and I dont want to dump that much cash into it. The price difference between a catback vs a test pipe is about $700.

Is just a test pipe with stock exhaust that loud? I heard sound clips on youtube and it doesnt seem that bad

    We dont have emissions here

    Re: Testpipe or exhaust?

I have the same dilemma right now. I want extra power, but dont want the added noise. I was thinking of just doing test pipe w/o exhaust. The only problem is that Im running giac, so t/p will be hard to get.

Im also torn because my test pipe on the B5 was pretty stinky

    Re: Testpipe or exhaust?

Oh ok, If you dont have to worry about emissions and your looking in a lil bump in HP then Ya go ahead an pick up a testpipe. They can be had for $100~$200, but they will smell a little bit just FYI

test pipes are loud at 3200 RPMs and they smell. i am running stock exhaust with TP and it stinks if u leave it in the garage for like 30 seconds lol. my friend says that my car is loud at night lol

    Re: Testpipe or exhaust?

idnt see how jst an exhaust will give u a 10 to 15hp gain, if ur looking for good all around power go with the testpipe, lol if anything ull save more weight than making more power with going with an exhaust..

    Re: Testpipe or exhaust?

I personally think the TP without exhaust sounds too raspy and ricey. I also don't care to have fuel smells in the cabin and I doubt that you'll see much in terms of power gains unless you upgrade exhaust also because the mid section of the piping in these cars is very restrictive.

Do it right, choose an exhaust with a nice note. I love mine and I bet my power gains are much bigger than a TP without exhaust.

    Re: Testpipe or exhaust?

ya i have to admit i hate the sound of a testpipe with stock exhaust it does sound ricey but i mean i dont care because i am just waiting to get an exhaust so it'll be better. but for TP there is alot of restrictions on a stock exhaust so you might wanna just get a new exhaust and get a high flow cat

your gonna sound a little hondaish with just a testpipe and no exhaust but your comparing 70$ to almost a grand. Id personally get an exhaust.

    Re: Testpipe or exhaust?

Thanks for all the feedback. I think majority of you are a bit more of my style and after much thought (2 months) I dont think I will sacrafice the everyday comforts and DB levels for an extra 7-12hp.

I will however do a catback exhaust just need to look around for the deepest sounding one. From what I have heard so far I believe AWE sounds the deepest?

I guess I have another one for some of you guys

unless you replace the stock cat the only thing an exhaust is gonna do is sound good and lose some weight (which is good too). if you're looking for added performance (slight power increase and better response) you have to replace the stock cat with a test pipe or high flow cat. I think the best you can do is replace the stock cat with a high flow then get a DP, custom or whatever then do a custom 3" or 2.75". Exhausts cost money (why I dont have one yet haha), and every bit of HP and weight loss counts

    Re: Testpipe or exhaust?

IMO exhaust wise the only ways to go are Milltek, Cargraphic, and AWE.

The first two have a mellow deep tone, and AWE is loud and sporty.
