JHM B6/B7 S4 and RS4 "solid" short throw shifter NEW AND IMPROVED and ON SALE!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
At JHM, customer's feedback is part of our driving force. Were here not to just sell and make great products, but to get your feedback and make the most of this platform. We addressed the issue that it was taking too long to adjust the shifter. We went back and found a way to improve this while retaining our superior design. Read below.

If you purchased our B6/B7 S4 and RS4 shifter prior to this update and are not happy with the length of time for adjustment WE WILL UPDATE YOUR SHIFTER FOR FREE AND INCLUDE FREE RETURN GROUND SHIPPING, no questions asked. Email us at [email protected] for details so we can arrange you to send it back for the update.

Close up picture of our industry exclusive upgraded bearing pivot assembly (ALL other SSKs reuse the stock rubber and plastic which wears out quickly over time and allow excess slop)

JHM B6/B7 S4 and RS4 SSK in the JHM store.

NEW AND IMPROVED! Why? Even though we were already dominating the market with the most engineered and built shifter available for the B6/B7 S4 and RS4, in true JHM style we knew we could make it just that tiny bit better. After months of R&D we made some minor revisions to the shaft that really aid in adjustment. Why would we do this? There was a debate about the degree of difficulty for the adjustment of Reverse and 1st-2nd, some people said it was easy and some said it was hard. So we spent the last several months making some small revisions to make it easier for everyone without changing our superior shifting quality. NOTE: If you purchased a shifter from us in the past prior to this update and want it updated for easier adjustment, email us at [email protected] for the FREE update program which includes free return shipping.

Nice to see a company take this approach!Shows pride in what you build. thanks.
Honestly, the only thing that was keeping me from buying this shifter was the worry about proper adjustment.

good stuff! what's the differences that will aid in adjustment? I'm thinking I'd like to get the upgrade, but I don't want to be shift-less or wanting to kill myself having to readjust :D

    X2.
I never got mine to be decent. I've stripped the adjustment bolt from working on it so much.
Also, do you mean you will send the new one and then us sending the old back? Either way this is one of the coolest things a tuner company has done and shows that you guys are not here just to make money but you really care what you sell. Big thumbs up!

so what if we already have it adjusted? Mine feels and drives great now (after a long headache inducing adjustment process). Is the feel and drive ability any different from the old model (MK1 ), or is this upgrade (MK2) just for aiding the initial install?

I had the previous version, and then the current improved version.
The feel and drive ablility IS improved.

See my comments in this thread:

My previous car was an A3, in which I installed the diesel geek short shifter.
My current '07 B7 S4, which I've had for all of 3 months, has been quite a transition.
The power delivery is completely different, light FWD vs. heavy quattro, cable vs. solid transmission linkage.
Compared to the short shifted A3, the stock S4 was Extremely long. Resolving that was my first priority.

JHM installed their extra short shifter, and asked if they could use my stock shifter for a while to study it's geometry to improve the performance of their short shifter.
My observations on the initial short shift install was that it was a welcome relief to the long and numb feed back of the stock shifter. It did reveal some nuances of the linkage that was dampened by the stock shifter. It seemed like I could feel the long linkage arm flex during the shifts. The linkage itself felt a bit sloppy, and there was a very small bit of finesse needed for 1st gear. About a week later, they asked to test their revised shifter in my S4. I agreed and also installed their weighted delrin shift knob.

I've spent several days now (all day today), evaluating the new version of their shifter and here are my observations:

The new version eliminates any need to finesse 1st gear and seems to have mitigated a lot of the percieved linkage flex, and the whole thing feels a lot tighter - more direct.

My A3 short shifter had a definite 'notchy' feel (not a bad thing); the JHM shifter in the S4 does not feel notchy, it feels 'mechanical' and direct.

The solidness and weight of the JHM shift knob (vs. the hollowness of the stock shift knob) definitely contributed to the solid & direct feel of the shifts.

I am now very happy shifting with fingers and wrist vs. my whole arm. The shift preciseness is much improved. Not that the remaining components of the shift linkage couldn't be improved by the JHM treatment, but the short shifter is a very welcome and worthwhile improvement.

Jason and the folks at JHM are a pleasure to work with - it is obvious that they are S4 enthusiasts.

We basically played with the angle of the reverse notch on the shifter to give you a bigger window so to speak of adjustment. It is easier and did make the 1st and 2nd a little cleaner as a nice bi product.

Email us at [email protected] and make sure you leave us a note you need a bolt. I can throw one in for ya. It is 5mm vs. the stock 6mm head (just cheaper to buy them that way in bulk and not through Audi)

NONE needed on the others, the B6/B7 S4 and RS4 was the consistent one that we heard about adjustment issues, the other ones it is pretty rare and usually just a lack of patience. I personally have installed them all the different models and the B6/B7 S4 - RS4 was harder, which made me unhappy, so I took care of it. The B6/B7 A4 and the B5 S4 were WAY easier to adjust and we can't do any better based on the limitations put on us by Audi.

Jason, so are we still looking at 3 degrees to the right and 7 degrees towards the rear for the most ideal adjustment...or does this not matter anymore due to the 'bigger window'?

Technically yes that technique should work easier. However that is just the factory spec so I forwarded that info in my instructions. I honestly due it by feel myself. I adjust it for the best feel of 1st-2nd and Reverse. Once those are right and the rear angle is about right its all good. The problem with the angles is that some people may not be on a level surface and others just struggle fumbling with the tool. Even then with the infinite adjustment Audi provided I would say that those angles are just a good reference point and do sometimes work. I think Audi was "trying" to make the adjustment appear easier with their broad design by providing a spec. You can't say "adjust to feel" in factory service manuals. Even though if you do read it it kind of does.

Re: JHM B6/B7 S4 and RS4 "solid" short throw shifter NEW AND IMPROVED and ON SALE!

Mine is not quite adjusted perfectly. If i push the stick all the way to the left and try to pull it in to second, i can feel a bit of a snag. however i've been too afraid to try to adjust it in case i threw it all out of whack and had to deal with the PITA S4 adjustments. However, since I installed the unit, occasionally putting it into 2nd gear the gear will grind, even if the clutch is fully depressed. This also sometimes happens when 2nd gear occasionally pops out of gear on its own. This didn't happen before the shifter, and frankly, the description of it makes it sound worse than it is. But is there any chance that this will be fixed if i just grow the balls and take the time to adjust it perfectly?

hate to be a downer. I love the unit.

I apparently put mine at the exact same angle as you did. I am having the exact same symptoms and just like you after 4 hours to adjust I'm too chicken to attempt it again. Email sent.

This pic is self explanatory. ALL others resuse the factory plastic/rubber pivot (which wear out quickly over time and contribute to slop, ask any owner that had some miles on their car that switched) It kind of plays into my court since I sell a lot of shifters to B5 S4 guys who had a brand-x that had a wasted stock plastic/rubber setup. As you can see ours is a full replacement and solution that will probably outlast the car. The bearing we use is rated to hold thousands of pounds.

Re: JHM B6/B7 S4 and RS4 "solid" short throw shifter NEW AND IMPROVED and ON SALE!

    This one is for Sakimano

Just had a chance to put the updated one back in after it's been sitting in the box for like 6 months. It finally feels like it should. Old one could never be adjusted on my car. It made me feel incompetent to do simple tasks. New one went in and I had gears right away. Didn't need any adjustments and it feel great. Very stiff and mechanical. Almost all notches are gone except going into 2nd but stock shifter had problems with that anyway.

I drove down and had JHM install mine this weekend, I'll post a full review later this afternoon but for now ! I knew it was going to feel better than stock but I honestly was not expecting how solid and direct shifting feels now.

    Thanks guys

I'm not anti-necro...I don't get why people get attacked by mods for it sometimes.

I think it's awesome when someone necrobumps, then someone else replies to one of the posts from 19 months ago, thinking he'll get a reply.

There needs to be a name for that...it's good and embarassing when you do it.

p.s. on the JHM shifter, what does your shifter knob/boot etc. look like afterwards?

Are the degrees the same with the angle finder with the new unit?

I think it looks way better. It's a bit lower but I prefer it that way because my arm sits in a more natural way to me. I'll try to remember and take some shots.

Makes me hate life that this system doesn't drop the shifter height at all. Only reason why I haven't bought it.

but it's still the same boot/knob?

I was just thinking it would look all aftermarket and awful. That's awesome then.

Yes, we usually don't use the angle finder and do it for best feel of 1st, 2nd and Reverse. But it will help you get close if not spot on if your car is on level ground.

It drops it 1/2" as stated on the product page. This is low as it can physically go in the confines of the shifter box with our design and retaining the OEM pushdown reverse.

ALL our JHM shifters RETAIN the FULL use of the factory knob. You will not know it is installed cosmetically. You will however noticed the improved feel, feedback and shorter throw.
