    Upcoming Build Thread. UPDATED!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
update 2 years later. still have larger turbo ambitions but more focused on rods pistons and precision ceramic. currently have rebuilt k03s chipped with stock exhaust and tp. i recently had a compressor clutch failure so i removed the compressor and inturn, the reciever drier and restrictor and tubing to evap housing. since anll the stuff that was previously in the way is now out of the way... i installed a b7 style dsmic with custom piping and shroud. still need to pick up s4 fender liners and ultimately an s4 front bumper but then might have bt/bat and might as well go front mount. i had to fix a boost leak and am currently running with maf unplugged but installed with stock tip. system is holding chipped requested boost and the 710n routed as dv is agressive as hell. just looking for funds for larger turbo and exhaust. enjoying my new winterized setup: dsmic with 260 cabin cooling. hoping for iat logs and pictures soon. might even make a diy if theres interest as its fairly easy on the 2001 awm engine.

Precision turbo with ceramic bearing chra, .63a/r
full-race or spa t3 flanged manifold
    upgraded rods (scat, ie, crower)
upgraded pistons w/ pins and rings (je or mehle 225TT)
550cc injectors (better spray pattern than 430cc?)
    AFPR
    MBC or EBC
    Mafless
    TP w/ 3" Turbo-back and magnaflow
    Clutchmasters fx400 sprung hub
    LWFW
    s4 ft bumper
ft mount or more efficient dsmic
    MAP and/or N75 as needed
    SAI system delete (already performed)
3 Full Throttle Fury Energy Drinks

Fuel and Ignition Kill Switches (Investment)

I want to upgrade to rods and pistons (JE, AEB, AMU/BEA???) later, and would like to run a safe tune until then. are the 225tt pistons compatible? I believe they are forged, and lower CR; but not sure about pin size.

My ultimate goal would be to install in 1 day, and be able to drive 40 miles to get it tuned the next day. i have access to an electric lift, and all necessary tools and experience (3 year audi tech, several turbo and engine replacements). are my goals set too high? Any and all input is welcome. Thanks all, and Happy Holidays!!

    Re: Upcoming Build Thread

I'd say bump it up to 630cc's and go with a Maf-less Unitronics file....you could have the SAI and N75 deleted, but you would need to keep the MAP (which I"m sure u know).

Also, thats a ton of work to get done in one day, especially when you factor in doing the clutch. I'd do the clutch ASAP, then spend the next month or so breaking it in (i went 1k miles for my break-in). That way you'll be ready to go WOT and log right away after getting everything installed.

I think doing it in stages is a better idea. Smaller mods like clutch, exhaust, or even the FMIC before you throw on the turbo and get a tune.

    Re: Upcoming Build Thread

Good good points, thanks. I didnt even factor in the break in period of the clutch. So if i do the clutch and exhaust earlier, i think i could manage the fmic and turbo in one day. could i expect to drive home in it by tweaking the AFPR, mbc, and going mafless; or would the stock ECM flip out? also, would that size fmic be enough for florida summers with an elim setup, or would i need a Comp fmic?

    Re: Upcoming Build Thread

The list you have is good. You shouldn't need a AFPR since you have a 2001 and the ecu makes adjustments even at WOT since the car does have a wide band 02 sensor. It might be helpfull if you were going with injectors that might be too small but even 550's are plenty enough for a elim kit.

thanks mike. i was worried that the 550's would be too big when out of boost (idle, cruise), but i guess the duty cycle and LTFT will compensate.

    Re: Upcoming Build Thread

I would see if you could scoop up a spare ECU and get that programmed, rather than driving around without the proper hardware for the stock tune.....but thats just me. Others have done it for short periods of time, but again, I personally wouldn't. Stock CH-box or M-box ecus pop up pretty frequently on Ebay for under $100 (i got one for $40 once), so see if you can locate one. That way you can throw in the Turbo and tune at the same time, and not worry about the car "flipping out" haha.

Not sure bout the FMIC. What HP is it rated for?......search Ebay FMIC. You should find a good bit of information about it

    Re: Upcoming Build Thread

Ok. after all the feedback, my plans are as follows:

    Pt 1
SouthBend Stage 4 w/ sprung disc & LWFW
    Torsen Shim kit
JHM SS full kit, knobber, custom boot
    TP w/ 3" Turbo-back (preferably mandrel-bent)
Glasspack and/or Magnaflow high flow muffler
Used Giac chipped ECU for 01 (CH or M)
    SAI System Delete

    Pt 2
Used OEM Exhaust Mani (ported and polished, gasket matched to turbo and head)
    gt2871r eliminator hardware kit(ported/gasket matched)
    550cc injectors
    MBC
    034 Catch Can
Unitronics Mafless Tune on spare (stock) ECU
    ebay FMIC 28"x7"x2.5", 2.5" in & out (K.I.S.S.)
    H20/Meth kit

the idea is to run around with chip and exhaust while gathering pt2 schtuff but isnt that how everyone starts out? my cat already ran away so ill most likely make a custom flange at the back of it for the 3" DP and have custom exhaust welded up locally from mandrel bent stock or just have it bent using inserts.

And if i ever win the lottery:
2.0t stroked awm block, forged internals, 8.5:1 CR
vvt AEB head (p&p'd), high rate valve springs, Ti Retainers, oversized inconel valves, 7-angle valve seats, custom ground billet hollow cams, custom equal length Exhaust Manifold (TIG-ification FTMFW) w/ T3 flange
    034 EFI engine management.
    ER Comp FMIC
Full Interior of nothing but rare albino manatee skin and Carbon Fiber (hey i won the lottery. fuggit!)

thanks for the help everyone. Any and all input, advice, or comments are welcome.

thanks for the input. im actually still looking into this. i was going to get the ebay core only, and then probably source my own custom piping using some1 else's measurements and bends. theres a guy on here who used the ebay core with those measurements, and was able (with very precise trimming of bumper and support bar) to fit inside a stock bumper while retaining fogs and lower grilles. it is a budget build, but i also want it to be effective. i like many others just cant afford to drop a grand on a fmic. if however some1 makes a quality pre-fabbed piping kit without the core, i would be very interested. thanks again. i really want to get all the advice i can prior to the build to avoid any mistakes.

that looks nice!!, i've NEVER seen a cleaner setup than that with the stock front bumper, hands down. All others ive seen are sketchy at best, with pipes sticking out of the grill holes (minus grills+fogs).

you don't have pictures of what the piping looks like with the front bumper off do you?

also, im wondering why he didn't grind the bottom nubs off the core.

Thats what i told him. ideally this is the route i want to go. i believe he used the godspeed piping kit. with modifications and lots of free time.

    Hey thats my whore!! :D

I got your PM kevin, and thought I would chime in here.

the FMIC install was very time consuming, it took me 2 1/2 hours to trim the bumper to allow the I/C to fit perfectly snug in there. Its tricky but if you take your time and you measure, cut, than refit the bumper everytime until you get it perfectly you can get it sitting in there correctly.

The way I got to keep my grills, and foglights is by using copper pipe, when i do my timing belt next weekend I will be sure to take pictures of the setup and post back.

Also when i used the bends off the FMIC i took it to the machine shop along with my front bumper frame and had them weld a box in the place I cut out to keep the strength. I also had them cut and angle the end tanks a little bit to allow the pipes to clear the fogs, its a perfect fit, also i did beat in the pipe a tad bit to help clear the foglights. Oh and the copper pipe looks stellar all polished up. To bad you cant really see it.

Let me know if there is anything I missed or could help on!

    Re: Upcoming Build Thread

    UPDATE!!!!!!

so after submitting my claim three times to the irs (couldnt get my wife's adjusted gross income correct), and checking my account by phone every day for the last two weeks (turbotax e-file ftl) i called the bank today and got such a nice message i had to listen to my balance 8 times in a row:

your checking account balance is Five Thousand dollars.

SCHWEET!!! sorry thats just the most money ive ever had at one time in my life and had to floss a bit. 2 grand is already spoken for (stupid bills) and 1g to stash away for a rainy day; but now that i have the money, ive lost my way. i can do:

~chip, exhaust, short shifter, and a front BBK (a8l)
~clutch, lwfw, exhaust, and short shifter
    ~chip
~elim kit on stock clutch (i dont think i want to go this route).

things that im definetly getting are:

~ airsoft guns for me and the wife (old one broke and cheaper than a wii)
    ~ 12-hour Sebring Tickets (Audi R15 Debut)
    ~ Bills, bills, bills...
    ~ RR Window Regulator
~ Desludge and pickup tube (light lifter noise on cyl 1)

car needs brakes all around, but other than that and the regulator its set to sail and still making the commute every day. basically im asking all you AZ'ers to....

    Help Me Spend My Money!!!!!!!

as always, any and all advice, tips, criticisms are welcome. i have pre-allocated this money for my car and i want to hook it up, i just want to do it right the first time, and also not manage to turn my car into a money pit. thanks e'rbody

    Re: Upcoming Build Thread

So, you have $2,000 for mods? I would do simple things to start the build for the BT. I would chip the ECU with Unitronics software, so you can upgrade with them later for maybe $250. If you bought BT software, it would cost ~$750. Might as well enjoy the flashed ECU if you are going to pay the same amount anyways. That is what I did, except with CTapp. Then get an exhaust set up. Maybe a 3" so you don't have to do it all over again. But many say it is overkill for the stock turbo, while others say go for it. Then do something about the suspension. Just little things to add up to your BT so you don't have to do it later and not end up spending any more money than what you would have if you were dropping the BT in at once. That would be my advice. Plus it will give you more time to re-evaluate what turbo set up you want, as many regret thier first choice.

stock awm longblock (rods & bearings later)
550cc injectors (better spray pattern than 430cc?)
    AFPR
    MBC or EBC
    Mafless (if easier)
    TP w/ 3" Turbo-back and magnaflow
    SouthBend Stage 4
    LWFW
    ebay FMIC 28"x7"x2.5"
    MAP and/or N75 as needed
    SAI system delete

3 Full Throttle Fury Energy Drinks

Fuel and Ignition Kill Switches (Investment)

I want to upgrade to rods and pistons (JE, AEB, AMU/BEA???) later, and would like to run a safe tune until then. are the 225tt pistons compatible? I believe they are forged, and lower CR; but not sure about pin size.
alot of that is what i plan on doing, that is why i bought my clutch from dth today as a matter of fact

but what i am doing different
    neuspeed tip
    atp highflow intake
    revo tune
    genesis 550 injectors
    2.75 exhaust
clutchmaster fx 400 with steel f/w
and no kill switches, as i have a garage to park in

and i am going to try and do most of this myself

i have a second ecu, but i tried starting the car one day and it wouldn't start i was told the ecu was fried, but looked at it....... don't see anything so i will be trying to re-install it and see what is up

    Re: Upcoming Build Thread

your other ecm may not be coded properly or depending on model year immobilizer/key may not be authorized by the second ecm. do the ecm's have the same part number? most likely need vag-com to see whats up with it while its connected to the car but thats another thread all together.

ive been thinking about it and since there is a giac dealer near me, i contacted a rep on here. he said they would reimburse me for the stage one if i go bt later, so i think im going to go with the x-chip, exhaust, and possibly clutch. what worries me is that i believe this is the stock clutch in my car. i bought it with 78k a year ago, and have put another 20k on it since then. i know it will handle chipped boost, but probably not boost from a 2871r elim. i want to go with the spec 15lb lwfw in conjunction with the SB stg 4, to reduce rotational mass while still having enough inertia to where it isnt a PITA to drive in traffic. hopefully ill get it all sorted out soon, and ill be sure to update you all as i go along.

another issue ive been curious about, and mike or some1 else may be able to chime in on this, i know the 71r elim has the triple-k turbine housing and a garrett compressor housing. what i want to know if if, since its a garrett compressor, can i clock the housing to change the direction of the compressor outlet. the reason im asking this is because if i can index the housing, i could easily go dsmic with very simple piping, and utilize the factory cross tube in the core support. ill prolly get flamed about the pressure loss, and the heat soak factor, but honestly it seems cheaper and easier than the fmic, while retaining a stealth look. the first core will heat soak but the second core should cool the intake charge to relatively the same amount as a small fmic (ebay). the only thing preventing me from going this route is the compressor outlet being pointed under the bumper shock/chassis bar rather than above it, which makes piping a dsmic a nightmare. if anyone has any information on clocking an elim turbo, it would be much appreciated. thanks for everything and look forward to suggestions/input. peace.

your checking account balance is Five Thousand dollars.

SCHWEET!!! sorry thats just the most money ive ever had at one time in my life and had to floss a bit.

    PEACE!!

update. still have larger turbo ambitions but still have rebuilt k03s chipped with stock exhaust and tp. i recently had a compressor clutch failure which necessetated the removal of the the compressor and inturn, the reciever drier and restrictor and tubing to evap housing. since anll the stuff t was previoushe way is now out of the way... i installed a b7 style dsmic with custom piping and shroud. still need to pick up s4 fender liners and ultimately an s4 front bumper but then might have bt/bat and might as well go front mount. i had to fix a boost leak and am currently running with maf unplugged but installed with stock tip. system is holding chipped requested boost and the 710n routed as dv is agressive as hell. just looking for funds for larger turbo and exhaust. enjoying my new winterized setup: dsmic with 260 cabin cooling. hoping for iat logs and pictures soon. might even make a diy if theres interest as its fairly easy on the 2001 awm engine.
