Bored so why not eh.

I'm bored due to the winter weather so today I decided I was going to smooth and shave my engine cover. Seems most take them off and paint/polish their valve covers. I thought I would taka a different approach. Coat one is completed. Still roughly 2 more coats, the glaze, then I'll shoot it high gloss black and pin stripe the rings white and red. Thoughts towards my boredom?



I shaved the letters off and threw it in the sandblaster to give it some roughness.



First coat. Gotta get a different sanding block so I can get into the "part line" in the center side.....

Maybe. It's pretty easy so far. However once I get to the final coat I'm sure the easy and fun will be gone while trying to make it non wavey.

Thanks, hopefully with more fanning out it will come out nicely. I'm already second guessing the pin stripping. Now I'm thinking a bronze/gold color for the rings.

Updates. Primer is on. Paint hopefully tomorrow, prolly not to Monday. Things are a bit busy for the rest of the week.....either way I like it thus far.

Cool. I had to do 4 coats and fanned it wayyyyy out to get it to look smooth. Sanded for ever as well. I have about 6 hours into it at this point, mostly sanding. My stuff set in 15 minutes. After paint and polish probably close to 8-10hrs. I'm not going to spend all this time on such a small part to rattle can. I'm going to bust out the gun and base/clear it. Still haven't figured out how I'm going to do the rings. I'm thinking Painting them first, then cover with tape, cut and trim a ton pull off, spray black, pull tape off of rings and then clear the whole thing.

what did you use to fill the holes and "part" line? Just bondo?

i used a couple products. But yes Bondo was one of the main elements. Bondo it easy to work with but tough at the same time being on a flexible plastic chunk. I hope you have a DA lol, if not your arms are gonna get ripped from lots of sanding and shaping.

Sweet, as for your rings I painted the "cover" on my vr6.

I bought some high-temp paint and sprayed it into a plastic bowl till I had a nice little puddle and dipped a brush in it. Turned out decent I thought. Just an idea.

I did that on both of my Corrado's. It looked good. I just want something a little smoother. As of now I'm still sold on the crappy tape until I find something that will allow me to cover and spray.

Im going to take a stab and say the bondo is going to heat up, expand/melt and ruin your work...

Post #4 explains the use for it. I wont be putting it on unless I'm at a show. Shouldn't really be an issue with my intended use. I have thought of that though and it's one of my main worries. Either way it's giving me something to do.
