i just did the headgaskets on my v6 12v and i got everything together and it wont start up. im scared that i messed up putting the timing belt (missed by a tooth?) on but i remember turning the crank by hand 2 rounds. any ideas on what i did wrong or anything? anything i should check? im thinking it could be a vaccuum leak maybe? how can i make sure im on the right teeth with the cams?

    Re: HELP car wont start

Need more info on what it is doing/not doing.

    Will it crank?

    Is there spark?

    Is there fuel?

    Re: HELP car wont start

it will crank but it sounds ugly. im pretty sure i have spark and fuel. it sounds like it wants to turn over and keep going but i wont. i changed out every gasket that i would have to go through until the headgasket. only thing i didnt change was the fuel injectors orings cause i didnt have new ones..

    Re: HELP car wont start

So many variables at this stage, VERY hard to diagnose with out being there. To be honest my gut says timing, your "sounds ugly" comment gives me that feeling.
Could also be a vacuum leak.

Just to many possibilities. Start by confirming timing, then process of elimination from there.

    Re: HELP car wont start

whats the easiest/fastest way to check if my timing belt is on the right spot? is there a possibility the valves could be bent from being off by one tooth?

    Re: HELP car wont start

Stress less brother, I have no idea what the interference tolerances are like in these engines. But I can confirm stressing about it will not help. Also a tooth out is *unlikely* to bend anything. That said, a tooth out will normally run, just very rough.

Line up the timing marks if you are totally unsure of where the timing is, other wise use a timing light?

    Re: HELP car wont start

i moved a tooth over on the timing belt when i discovered my mistake but now its backfiring is that the correct term? it sounds like firecrackers at random times. i only started it up 2 times for like 2 seconds each. happened the second time i turned it on. is that normal or am i a tooth off on the other side now?? ahah

Ok, backfiring is better than what you had before. Move another tooth, same direction as before, you may have been 2 teeth out.

    Disclaimer:
This is what I would do, do it at your own risk, I have no idea of where your timing is, so it is up to you to decide if this is safe.

    truth and not truth.
ive been off one tooth on my 1.8 for a while and didnt know it.
(cel for cam position sensor - implausible signal) car will run fine but throw a cel
2 teeth and youre getting close to hitting valves
3 teeth and it shouldnt even let you turn the crank shaft.

if you rotated that crank manually at least 3 times and lined the cam tooth marks up like you were supposed to timing should be fine.

the thing is i forgot to mark the sprockets with the block.. i just marked the belt and sprockets and matched it up. when i was putting it on i moved the sprocket by accident and didnt know where it should be after that.

which side shall i move over one more tooth? the same side i changed earlier? ill take a picture and show you once i get it in place.

im sure the harmonic balancer is lined up with the line on it and the arrow.
then the side with the BIG HOLES on the cam gears should be facing inward but does it have to be facing perfectly inward?

dude pull your valve covers and check the tooth marks on the cam shafts.
rotate your crank until you see them line up (or attempt to line up)

no need to take off valve covers to check the teeth. im standing in front of my car right now.

this is where im at right now. the setup WITH backfire. on the right side it was a tooth to the left off so i went right one tooth.
    sorry for shitty cellphone pics

    Re: HELP car wont start

im thinking the timing with backfire is the best setting. i moved everything a notch 1 over each side on both sprockets and n other option is doing better. what else could i check? vacuum? do a compression check too?

if you look down. theres a dirty blue hose on the right side of the throttle body thats not connected to anything. where does that connect? i didnt remember ever pulling that out of anything when i was disassembling everything.

    Re: HELP car wont start

You may have to reprogram your TB...

Reset your battery then turn the car to the on position for 30 sec then start it...

Or you may have a vac leak
