Tiptronic shifting when chipped..

I was wondering when you guys shifted after your car was chipped. 1st gear blows but 2nd and 3rd are great...it just sucks off the line obviously.

So for those of you that have a 1.8T and are chipped, what rpms do you usually shift when trying to get the max out of the engine? When you race, do you usually just leave it in Sport mode? Thanks guys.

leave it in tip and floor it, or if ur more technical around 5200

Actually the only reason why S or D is faster then TIP mode is because the tq conv doesn't lock in S and D. So technically... the computer isn't smarter . There isn't really optimal shift points imo, i've tried at the qm, whether you shift right where your power band starts to fall or not, you yield very similiar results. Even TIP mode and S mode have moderate differences. The thing that truly holds us tip guys down is the speed of it shifting, as well as the lack of ability to launch. Sooner or later, one of us will figure it out, and we will take over the 5/6 speed guys...hopefully.

Its ok, i've seen your video of you launching, and I think it moves quite good for apr 1+. Give us Tippy guys some time, and hopefully by the end of the winter, I'll have something more presentable in terms of tiptronic BT's.

In the end its who has more knowledge, research, and money spent. Manual guys have to upgrade their clutches and flywheels, we just have to get our tq converters and potentially valve bodies. Which not many has stepped up to the plate for, and even for the people that did, for some odd reason they keep it pretty DL.

vinny, i guess since i have every freaking mod 1+ can have except w/m it goes OK... whenever things turn around im either going to try that new ecode gtrs greg is working on or build my motor and do a 3076..... then we will see how she moves along

whats all that TQ and VB work run? a good clutch with install can easily run $2k... i know i spent about $700 by the time it was said and done with new bolts, spline drive sockets from snap on, beer, aspirin and bandaids.....

I'm curious if a chipped tip car will shift later, ie 'in the red', since most chips remove the early rev limiter. Is this the case?

im not sure but i thought there was some kind of TIP chip? something for the tranny to change its shifting?

you know what 1 is slacky and slow..

but the best is when im in TIP mode.. and im driving... and ill be doing like 50... and someone will be drving like an ass.. ill just slamm the pedal to WOT and itll jump in the third gear.. and boom ill start going fast! haha.. and then i upsift and let go of the accel and punh it back.. and i hear a little backfire.. =)

You could try a trans cooler, however, I've talked to a few people about it, and they don't think its feasible for you to. The transmission fluid has an optimal temperature where it works best, and by adding a cooler, yes you are making it run "cooler" but it might not be best for the tranny. I was going to go that route, until I did more research and started logging the car. I'll probably have a pretty good report of tranny temps with the GTRS kit. Btw, I don't think the tip chip would be a waste, and believe me, when I'm done testing it, you'll probably want one too. :P


Oh and yea, i'll believe it when I see you put a GTRS in there :P, I'm sure Doug will do a good job, and sorted all out for you.

Every company has quoted me different, and it has ranged from 700 to 1200 for just parts. This is just for the TQ convertor. So we'll see. I'm aiming for a higher stall tq convertor so i can launch this baby once in a while. This will easily exceed $2k, sadly...

I had my valve body upgraded and torque converter done and every body talks shit about the the ZF tiptronic but Im confident my tiptronic would hang with most manuals out there. I blew apart my torque converter on apr 1+ so with a complete rebuild and high stall torque converter it set me back 5k. The shop said that the tc is good for 700 ft lbs of torque. Plus, I need a hand free to take care of your girl. she deserves the extra attention. Ha Ha. Go TIP.

Edit- I've noticed in D around town (which is quite hilly) that when I punch the gas it's like the computer freezes and RPM's jump all over the place when on a hill. Since getting Stage 1 Revo... i'm in Tiptronic mode 99% of the time which shifts fine and more fun but just annoying when I am in D.

Yeah I am apr stg 1+ and in d mine is all over the place. If I am ripping on it 3-5th it will hold 21 lbs of boost with no fluctation. Its really weird. In s or tip its nice. I usually rock the s.
