Early season snow base = Major damage to my new snowmobile

Over $1000 damage to the new Polaris Dragon. Hit a rock carving in an open field at ~20mph last Friday. Ski tried to go under the rock. Bent lower A-arm in half, crack middle supports on upper A-arm, sheared shock in 1/2 at the upper threads, cracked/broke plastic body behind shock tower (under clutch), ski bolt sheared through and ski is warped, carbide warped, bearing for lower a-arm in spindle needs replaced. Was able to bend the steering arm back straight. Spindle is fine minus one copper/brass sleeve/spacer. Sway bar is fine. Side panel is fine. Most all the hardware is fine. Did not hit the primary clutch (thank god). Had to ride it back to the truck for 5 miles in this condition. Jerry rigged the ski back on. I would have just lifted the ski up the whole way back but if the ski lifted off the ground and touched back down it flipped itself over and reversed itself. No bueno.

My buddy riding my polaris edge popped the trailing arm off, and bent 2 tie rods and bent some hardware. Had to do some work with a punch and hammer to get the trailing arm connection through the bulkhead straight again. About $120 worth of parts to fix.

Did get to do some climbing with the Dragon before she broke and I have to say that the track hooks up like crazy in the steep/deep. I was very impressed. Such an easy sled to ride.

4 of the 7 sleds in our group had severe damage on Friday. All in all an expensive day. 40" of base on snotel doesn't mean shit when it's not set up.

Sorry to hear. It's still very thin in many places. Still on my rock skis even after the dump.

That sucks man, sorry to see that.

If it makes you feel any better, I now need a new board after wrecking one of my edges on a semi-covered boulder. (Although it isn't a $1000 board).

Re: Early season snow base = Major damage to my new snowmobile

Sucks about having to get a new board though, been there before. Although I'd rather wreck a board than a sled. Looks like I'll have to go boarding at the resorts this Saturday instead. Still not enough snow to sled or ride on in the backcountry yet. Sooooo damn tempting though... At least the sled is easier to work on than the audi.....minus taking rivets out lol.
Charlie I'll hit you up and you can ride that sled sitting next to the Dragon in the pic. It's even more powerful. Close to the power levels your avant is sitting at right now stock.....but it weighs 500lbs hehehe

Re: Early season snow base = Major damage to my new snowmobile

Cause it's a small area and only advanced riders like myself can get in there most the year without getting stuck a dozen times on the way up. I've taken up riders who have been on snowmobiles for years and even they can't get in there without getting stuck and jacking up the trail in with bomb holes from digging out... I have to keep traffic to that area to a minimum for my own sake, sorry...

i was just looking for like an area or range of mountains to see what the snow was like. i'm actually riding on private land so i'm not considering crashing your spot.
