    bad turbos or no?

So after replacing my downpipes (with resonated test pipes) I can hear the turbos a lot more, but it's making me paranoid that there's something wrong... they make a somewhat loud whistling noise when not in boost, but when under boost they tend to quiet down for the most part, does that mean they're fine?

I have the same issue but i have not replaced my downpipes but still have the whistle when not on boost. I assumed it was a leak of some sort.

the whistle sound is the turbos spooling up its normal. They are bad if they sound like a siren. They are probably louder now because of the exhaust

no.. when it starts to sound like they're drilling a molar you should start worrying. The turbo is supposed to make sound spooling up guys... it's normal. haven't you ever heard a semi truck or city bus? it sound much like our cars spooling up.

I'm surprised how much you can hear Golf/Jetta TDI's spooling. What do they have in there anyways as far as a turbo goes? Is it a K03?

    TDI's either have KKK KP39A turbo's or I believe a Garret 17v.

They are pretty loud, especially when comparing them to stock 1.8t ko3's. When i had my car bone stock, i drove a TDI and wondered why they were so much louder, i mean it was noticeably slower when compared to my 1.8t

and OP if you're talking about when the car's in vacuum you can hear the spool then you're fine, it's normal spool up

    Re: bad turbos or no?

Remember that the turbo's audibility is determined primarily by how the intake and exhaust are set up, that's really where the turbo's noise emits from...with size/type of turbo of course being a factor as well.

Ours are quiet stock because of the lengthy plumbing and thick airboxes, actual sizing of the turbo, restrictive exhaust/pre-cats etc.

The TDI's probably have a slightly more open intake/exhaust system somewhere along the line and that makes them a bit more audible.

You're hearing the turbo through your exhaust system much better, and that's a good thing.

I'm pretty sure if one of your turbo's go, you'll know it.
