    wire tuck/engine shaving thread

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
While my engine bay probably wont turn out as extravagent as Rob's, i still decided to start on my wire tuck thread. I started today by removing a few things and I planned out where all my wires will hide and run. I deleted cruise control, and one washer fluid resivour. The battery is going in the trunk. The power steerign and coolant resivour are going into where the battery was. Im going to try reusing the power steering fluid resivour, and getting a mkiv expansion tank since it will sit behind the firewall nicely.

btw does anyone know where i can get that cover that hides the battery, and ecu box and all that stuff behind the firewall?

    pics of progress today.

Nice! Your looking for the piece that goes over the battery like on a 2001? We have them in stock up here at A&P.

    Re: wire tuck/engine shaving thread

I like the battery relocation and then moving the tanks, that is a great idea! I'll be watching to see how everything turns out. I'd like to clean up my bay just a little.

    BTW, like the intake mani!

Also, would a "sphere" coolant tank from like a MkIII work, it seems like it might fit better where the battery is.

    The plan:
the red dot is where one hole for the majority of the wiring harness will shoot through, then come out the underside of the firewall.
The things listed in red are hidden underneath the ac filter.
The MAF wires will run the same route as the wires to the starter do.
The coil cover will hide the coilpacks, cleaning up the engine bay nicely.
The injector wires will run underneath the intake manifold.

    more progress:

btw, whats the rule on the EVAP? do we just leave the line open from the tank, or do we need the valve plugged into the line?

Who makes the electric fan kit for our cars?

I am pretty sure you need to keep the purge solenoid in there but can just run it open.

I thought the same thing, however when i got gas when i had it hooked up like that, the gas tank had a lot of pressure in it.

Because it needs the vaccum to suck down the pressure. Why not run the vaccum hose to the purge valve still, I'm sure you can find a place to hide it and run the hose.

hmm..so what happens when the car is not running and not creating vacuum, how does it release the pressure for the gas going into the tank?

The pressure is created by the sloshing around of the gas while driving and heat. The pressure is released with the purge valve when the car is started in that situation. There (on some cars is a leak detection pump) which also aids in releasing pressure. Also the pressure doesn't go into the tank, it comes from the tank since that is where the gas is at.

Gotcha.. yeah we have a leak detection pump in our cars, at least in my 2000 I do. I read on the b6 forum you don't need the vac on the purge solenoid, it will figure itself out, just run it to the ground. Who knows how true that is for us b5's but yeah, i think i'm gunna run it open for a bit and fill up like that once my cars back together to see how true that is. and T1, from what I have read with the b6 guys, I wouldn't worry about that, 1 line should be plenty. Our systems compared to the b6's are very similar, just minor differences. Have a full write-up if you search pcv removal or something idk if you looked at it yet.

crazy easy ;) Just throw everything in the false firewall and relocate the battery to the trunk. I should only need to extend two wires, the maf wires and the evap wires.

Under boost there is pressure in the vacuum line up to the check valve, which is the reason for the check valve, it holds the vacuum in the line so your right it wasn't doing shit under boost. All intrusive evap systems only operate at idle so without a leak detection pump the only time it operates is at idle or in vacuum conditions. If you are looking to keep the evap system without having codes you will need the vacuum line I believe, one should be enough as I am not even sure why the split the line to 2 different sources just after the purge valve.

One for during vacuum and one for during boost. The one at the TIP is for boost and the one to the underside of the intake manifold is for vacuum. It's to make sure that any gas released by the purge valve is put back into the engine and isn't released into the air.

I have zero knowledge as far as that comment goes, BUT I can tell you that that is incorrect. How is a line in the TIP for boost? Considering the TIP NEVER SEES BOOST. it is always in a vacuum state. And yeah 1 should be fine, personally I would TRY to run it open and see what happens, but thats me.
