    Angry Elusive Oil Pressure Light

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
If anyone can help figure out this dreaded red warning light and why it intermittently comes on and off that would be a big help. My local dealership has seen my car 3 times this week diagnosing this issue, the first time I brought it in they found that the oil pressure sensor to be faulty after running a diagnostic test and compression check. The part was replaced ($45) with labour ($119 / hr). I am out of warranty (4 years or 80,000kms), so I had to pay for that up front.

The light still came on so I brought it back a second time, and demanded that I get refunded at least partially for the original work since they didn't solve the problem. This second time around the service manager decided that all work would be covered under a "good will" warranty, so all subsequent work / parts related to the oil pressure warning would be at no cost to me. At this point the work involved was this:

Cause: Pressured test system. Found after running oil pressure started to drop below spec. Removed valve cover. Inspected all bearing caps for cams. All OK.

Correction: Performed oil sludge TSB. Replaced all necess. hoses & parts. Rechecked oil pressure & roadtested vehicle OK.

    Parts replaced:

After they performed all this work the car ran fine until I was getting ready to go home from the gym and two of my coil packs failed and I had to get the car towed to the dealership late at night last Friday. I ended up replacing all 4 coil packs to be safe, at this point I'm cussing out all sorts of swear words.

Now, the oil pressure light STILL comes on intermittently. What is the deal? I am going to phone the dealership tomorrow and let them know what's up, but has anyone experienced this or know the cause of this dreaded oil pressure light? FYI - the weather here has been quite cold lately, about -5c to -10c.

wow. that's a hell of a deal and i wouldn't be cussing anyone since you had your oil pump, a bunch of tedious hoses and parts, and an oil change from the dealer for $150. while out of warrenty at that..

but im not sure what the deal is.

you say it's your red oil light that comes on? the one NOT in the middle DIS screen?

cause my oil sensor light on the DIS screen comes on intermitently while driving in the cold. im sure it's just a faulty sensor though.

Actually the first time I brought the car in they charged me $454, I was really tired when I typed this up the first time, so I made a mistake. The $454 was for a new oil pressure sensor ($45), Labour to work on that ($119), labour to work on a faulty brake pad sensor that kept telling me my brake pads are worn but in fact they are not ($119) + taxes (14%). I was starting to get pissed since it's Christmas and I had to spend another $202 for 4 coilpacks that I installed myself that the dealer wanted to charge me another $119 labour just to throw the coilpacks in and erase the fault code.

Yeah, the oil pressure warning light is the RED one that takes up most of the DIS screen. Not the small orange one. It has an oil flask with an animated drip.

Oil pump number does not match up to anything I can find so did they fit a new pump or not as this is the part number I found which is for your engine and if they did not I bet it's the cause of the low oil pressure:

    oil pump
    / ALZ,AVJ,BFB, BEX,AVB,AMB, BKE
    (1) 038115105D
    or
oil pump / to be used for:
    06A 115 121 / AVF,AWX
    2 N 0282222

058-133-753-D - PUMP appears to be a vacuum system part.
It could be the Oil Pump or possibly a bearing. It may be worth replacing the pump, though the dealer will charge quite a lot for that.

Roman, oil changes were done at every recommended service interval. I realize that people change it more frequently. I just went by the book. Never a late oil change.

    Hey Doc,

Good find, I figured if I posted all the part numbers from my work invoice that someone would have a wise answer. I have no clue what the proper part number should be for the oil pump, I can't view vagcat's information since I'm not registered. Perhaps you are right. But then what is this --> "058-133-753-D - PUMP" ?

    Re: Elusive Oil Pressure Light

What happen with the oil pump is that the pickup pipe get a little blocked from sludge and so make the pump work hard so in turn wearing it out, my mate calls it a lazy pump.

I had mine replaced when I would get the Oil light and it was sweet after that and the engine sounded like new again.

So every 15K kms huh? I'll never understand why Audi chose this interval. I change mine every 8K kms.

You see, the dealer told me they replaced that pick-up pipe and screen, which was blocked by sludge. Now shouldn't this have helped the situation? I guess it apparently does not. What price does an oil pump go for?

I called the dealer today and they are at a loss at what is still causing the light to go on. The service rep. mentioned that it may be now an electrical issue, and that my AWE vent gauge may be causing it. I'm weary of bringing it back just to have them charge me to diagnose it again.

^^ typical of dealers. If they can't fix it, they blame aftermarket parts.

They went to the trouble of taking the sump off and did not replace the pump!!!!!

It's like doing the Cam Belt you change the water pump because it's cheaper to do it now then have it go later and do it all again.... fools.
