When do you know if it is time to say goodbye?

Well there are two reasons I am asking this question. The first reason over the past few summers issues have come up where I haven't really been able to drive the car. Let me start by saying that I live in NC and I am originally from NYC. This summer my a/c shaft stripped again, last summer it stripped for the first time, summer before I had axels replaced and shop put a big ass dent in the door, summer before that I had to get my compressor replaced. I think that is 4 yrs of issues that I can think of. I purchased a tune in nov last yr that I still haven't installed. I have every part needed for a timing job as well and new clutch and flywheel. These have been purchased over the past yr and now I have to wait 6-8 months for the shop that I want to do the work to be free to do it. Also today I was trying to fix a bad headlight restoration that was done back in feb, to only make the lights worse. Now I need a new pair of headlights. The second reason I just bought my mom a new 2019 nissan altima turbo which is leaps and bounds better and more modern than my B6. At the end of the day my car is almost 16 yrs old. I bought it Cpo nov 2007 with 46k miles and I now have about 115k on it, and it is paid for. I have toyed with the idea of getting a B8 s4 and I do not like the way the B9 looks nor the price tag. I will admit I am bored with the car and the age of it makes me wonder if it is time to move on. I would love to hear opinions and feedback on this topic.

I feel if you don’t enjoy the car as much as you use to and it’s not putting a smile on your face every time you drive it then it may be time to move on. I went through this last year with mine. I hated to get rid of it but it needed to be done.

I'm sick of stuff breaking and beeping at me too. Was really thinking about a b8.5 s4, but buying a honda that just works is a pretty tempting idea too.

Well you are bored with the car, imo that's enough reason to part with it. That being said, I would sign-up for only 2 stripped ac shafts compressor and axles in 4 years.

I came from honda before audi. I had a turbo civic and had a blast. If I got a honda rite now it would have to be a type r.

I will say this, as far as repairs go I have been very fortunate. Not counting tires, oil changes, warranty issues or routine maintenance this has been my repair list in order. Block started leaking coolant. Block had to be taken apart and resealed $880, Starter $350 ish, Shocks and all front control arms $1200 ish, compressor and all front mounts $1300 ish, 2 axels $700 ish, a/c shaft and p/s line $240. I'm not including the timing or clutch stuff as its not installed yet. All if this was in the last 8 yrs so.

Seems like normal maintenance items that’s would come up given cars age&mileage. Btw had the same move NYC to CLT & love it haha Anyways, I wouldn’t say Altima is leaps and bounds ahead of our platform, however it did age quite a bit at this point and I kinda see where you’re coming from. With that said from what I’ve read in your post, it seems like you’ve made up your mind already... When it’s time it’s time. Personally, I just LOVE these beasts. Even after driving quite a few new vehicles on a daily basis, whenever I get into my B6 it just puts a smile on face, so keeping it 4ever

Honestly I haven't made up mind. Truthfully I will more than likely get a second car. I'm 2hrs east of you and it is very rural here and you need a second car out this way. I was going to order some FI dps today, until I went a messed up my headlight .

I think what I need more so than anything, is someone to tell me I should stay with this platform.

If someone thinks that a 2019 anything is leaps and bounds better than their current car, then I think it is time to move on. I relate your statement to my half father in laws statement. He is looking for something to replace his old SUV. He sees the cheap Korean and other makes that have all of the features for X amount. Every time I drive him around in my S, my wifes 3.2 or my wagon, he is like, wow this is a nice car, yes, yes they are for 15 years old, they age very well if taken care of. So I help him with his search and I keep throwing older Audi SUVs at him for X amount. He struggles with the fact that they are older than what he can still get his money for. And it boiled down to his simple remark; "Blake, all I want is the best value." I told him that is the most subjective comment related to purchasing a vehicle, blah blah blah, all this to say, if you see more value in a brand new car, over your current older Audi, then it almost sounds like your mind is made up.

I am on the complete opposite spectrum, where the value I see in cars are the older generations, I dont need a dash with maps on it, or internet hot spot capabilities, blind assists, collision avoidances etc. I do ALL of my own work, clutch, axles, timing belts, tensioners, etc. So a car without a monthly payments, knowing it inside and out and without it having a millions sensors, is the most value to me. If it breaks down, I have a B car, and can fix it over a weekend because they are so simple*. My sisters 2019 S5 needed to new wheel bearings under 5000km. Her 2018 S3 has constant airbag lights and sensor issues, under 20,000km, no accidents. KM. The dealer felt so bad for the never ending problem, they took it back and then jumped into the S5. I'm not knocking newer Audis, as I am sure that this kind of stuff happens with all other brands. But they come with warranties, and for some people that is worth the weight. They drove SQ5s, A6s, A7s, S4s for months as loaners, it was GREAT! Which I challenged my father in law, it turned out he wanted a SUV he didnt have to think about, enter a something with a warranty.
Not one of these shady used car dealer warranties, a legit warranty that covers everything.

I hate steering people away from the B6/B7 platform, because I love it and will stick with it for the unforeseeable future. Not because of budget, but because these machines keep the smile on my face every time I drive any of them. But in this instance is sounds like I have say, grab something with a warranty and your life will be much simpler.

*I understand there is nothing simple about the 4.2 timing to everyone, but they are if you can do all of the work yourself.

I agree with others, it depends on what your heart is telling you.
I personally dislike the newness feel and over compensating electronics/assistance of new cars. I have virtually rebuilt my entire car because of poor PO's, but love it.

It doesn't have to be the quickest or handle the best, but it is exactly what I want. It also helps to do your own repairs...

If you dont look back after locking the door and walking away, you brought the wrong car.

Best of luck with your decision.

Ps. Give the car to Vinny for the timing service. His probably bored and needs something to keep himself busy

I agree with you. As far as having a smile on my face, it's been a long time. This has also been the longest I have ever had a car. The timing really doesn't scare me, now scoring and bad rings that scares me. I'm not afraid to wrench as I have been doing it since I was in my teens and I'm 41 now. I'm 90% sure that I could do it on my own, just the hrs I work make that impossible. I think it's more of the seasonal issues that come up every summer, that has me feeling that way.

If you want to save a bit, go with Milltek DPs, quality is there and pricewise it’s less than 50% of JHM/FI ones. They’re 2.5” too. Just to be clear here I’m referring to catless option as catted ones are much more expensive.

If you want I could sell you my factory bixenon headlights in awesome shape? I’m swapping for euro spec ones.

I need catted, I can't deal with the smell. I have ecodes now and I could never go back to NA spec bixenons. Thanks though

Now and then when the car is getting into my wallet I lose some enthusiasm. A mod that makes it more enjoyable, more my car perks me right up.

Do what your heart is telling you man. I'm the same age and I've poured a lot of money into my B7 in just the last 18 months. Aaaaaaaaand I still have a 'to do' list. Wallet hates it, but every time I park it I always look back. I love it.

If you don't have the same feeling then I think it's time to move on... but, I wish you the best with your decision!
