Red face 3rd gear grinding is killing meeeeee....

well about a week ago this disgusting 3rd gear grind came out of no where... and its killing me... what is weird is when the car is very cold it takes alot for it to grind into third.. when the car is warm it grinds hard... if i let the rpms drop between gear and gently put it in i can bypass the grind. down shifting into third is impossible to do with out the sound of hell.. it sucks.. im going to change the gear fluid and put a magnetic drain plug. what else should i or could i do.

I have grinding too. If you haven't changed your tranny fluid maybe try either redline or amisol MTG 75W-90. That is my plan this weekend maybe.

sounds like a bad syncro. Like you said, try changing the fluid. Iv heard using some good fluid can help out with the grinding. Such has royal purple. But dont take my word for it.

My car also shifts stiffer when its like below 15. Im going to change over to royal purple this week or so.

    Good luck

Your looking to Spend around $500 on labor, I would stay away from buying a used one never know might have issues also. I would get yours rebuilt or buy a broken 2.8 and rebuild that and start fresh. Never know what kind of abuse someone else puts on the transmission

Re: 3rd gear grinding is killing meeeeee....

If it happened out of no where... takes one hard/bad shift to blow up a 3rd gear synchro. Ask me how I know. LOL

Transmission will be pooched soon enough.

I bought a transmission off ebay from LKQ in Quebec. Cost $300 shipped. 60,000ish miles on it. Shifts great. Cost me $400 total, including the purchase of OEM trans fluid. (30 a bottle = $90)

It was a B5 transmission so I had to swap some stuff. :)

    good luck man

Re: 3rd gear grinding is killing meeeeee....

There is a difference between having it go hard into gear when its cold and having it not go at all. My brothers saab has to be put into reverse before he can shut off the car and the reverse syncro is so bad it takes him a good 5 grinds before it goes in he just slams it and it grinds like hell. Rebuild is going to be allot I would see if you cant just find a good low mile tranny.

Re: 3rd gear grinding is killing meeeeee....

Yeaaaa I knoww.. I'm going to look around keep my options open... I would just hate to get a used trannyy and it also have problems... what would be the benefits and downfalls of having a 2.8 tranny... and does it take more then just a tranny to do a 2.8 swap...

2.8 swap is pretty easy it bolts right up with minor adjustments. 2.8 had longer gear ratio so its high mph in each gear. There is a chart someone will prob post that shows I think 10mph in each gear extra.

    01A / 012 tranny's have syncro's on reverse.

    The 01E 6-speeds however don't.

If you're going to replace the tranny I'd go with b6 6 speed tranny or bust.
