Quality questions from the new audi owner.

Ok so I came across a great deal for a 99 1.8t quattro. (Auto) it has 82,000 mi for about $4000 CDN clean title etc.

However, it needs a new timing belt, water pump etc. which i've done my research on parts but im concerned about the labour. I've read that most of the people on the forum are comfortable doing it themselves and said there are plenty of DIY tutorials on how to do it. I personally have only found B6 tutorials. maybe a link would be greatly appreciated.

Secondly, I am in the process of putting the car through the safety process, my mechanic has informed me that i need to fix front upper control arm (bushings), ball joints. on the passenger side. would i be better off to buy bushings separately or to purchase a whole new control arm with the bushings already installed?

Finally, my rear left tire/wheel makes a humming sound as i drive. I suspect it to be the wheel bearing because i can hear it more when i turn and increase/decrease speeds? Does this make sense?

What i am most concerned about is the decrease in speed almost like light pressure on the brakes when i release the gas pedal. Now the weird part is that when i put the car in neutral and release the gas there is a less drastic decrease in speed. a normal feeling.

Is this typical for the quattro system? to have poor road resistance? if not what else could i be having problems with?

Note: My abs module needs to be rebuilt (abs light is on and ebrake light flashes) and the rear pads and rotors to be replaced.

Any of help in regards to these topics is greatly appreciated in advance! I am extremely impressed with my first audi.. it's dope..haha

    THANKS!
    Nick

The timing belt & water pump should be same as b6 model.

If i were you i would just replace front's upper & lower to make sure it doesn't go bad later on.

To check wheel bearing is bad you will need to do figure 8 while your driving to test if the bearing is bad.

It's seems like there is alot of things that need to be done with the vehicle. You buy the vehicle for 4000 & roughly another 3000-4000 on parts & labor unless you could do labor yourself. I would recommend spending more money & finding a vehicle that is in better shape

Timing belt and water pump are different from the B6 model.

B6 has internal water pump, B5 has external.

    All the DIY's you need

    http://www.audidiy.com/b5a4.html

As long as the control arms are bad on both sides you might want to look into buying everything. (shameless plug--->)Check my sig for a good deal.

The hum is a wheel bearing.

For abs rebuild go for modulemaster.com

No idea about the decrease in speed, maybe you need to upshift :)

I agree that the $$ you will spend could have got you a newer and better Audi. Your car seems like an Audi that was not well taken care of. The symptoms are like everything that can go bad on a Audi . Well I wish you luck if you plan on repairing the car.

the wheel bearing will cause increased friction though im not sure if it will cause the road resistance you are speaking of. another possible cause is binding calipers. enjoy your audi and welcome to AZ.

Re: Quality questions from the new audi owner.

hey guys! thanks very much for all the responses so far have been extremely helpful in diagnosing the situation. I got all the parts i needed for control arm/ brakes and tb/wp job. So soon they will come in, after ive done the rear brakes i will give an update on the resistance thing. I think its something i need to look into hopefully its just a caliper.. If im still having problems i'll shoot a video maybe so you guys can tell me if its normal or not..

    THANKS AGAIN
