Re: I finally got my vag-com cable to work!

What did you do to get it to work?

What problem were you having? This could be helpful info for others who are having problems getting their vag-com to work.

Usually the problem is getting the com port set right to run with the program.

Your problem sounds more of a ecu problem or possible dirty connection instead of your vag-com software.

best way to try is with someone elses odb II cable (sounds like you tried this already) or using someone elses laptop with the vag-com software.

from my own experience and trying to help others I've found a few things with getting vag-com to work:

    1. With xp it will work fine, biggest problem is setting the com port. Sometimes they will be used and you have to go into control panel and free up one of the com ports 1-4. this has to be done with the cable hooked up to car after the driver is installed for the usb odb II cable.

    2. with vista you have to run the program as administrator (right click on the vag-com icon, then chose run as administrator)
again you have to set the com port, this has to be done with the cable hooked up to car after the driver is installed for the usb odb II cable.

If you are running vista 64 bit, I dont think it will run vag-com at least I havnt seen it work. If someone has gotten it to work, let us know.

I'm thinking you might have to replace the connector. I dont even know if that is possible. I would say it has to be, but havn't looked down there to see what the odb II connector is hooked up to under the dash.

Re: I finally got my vag-com cable to work!

Well I bought a key-com and bought the wrong serial to usb adaptor, though it was the keyspan brand. I tried everything with that adapter. I was going to sell the vag and do the ebay cable, but I decided to man up and buy the usa-19hs serial to usb adapter from Keyspan since I already have the real ross-tech cable. I had already read so much on it that setting the com port on the cable was easy and I was just surprised how it just simply worked when I plugged it in and ran vag-com!

    BTW, windows XP

Re: I finally got my vag-com cable to work!

I have no luck with my laptop, its a HP and aparenty the way it emulates serial ports is weird, i tried the run as admin since i'm on vista, gave the cable its own port, all that stuff, it recognized the cable now, and it didn't do that before, but when i plug it in i get no signal.

other vag com cables have worked with my car, so its gotta be the computer or the cable.

I just got an oldschool laptop, its running windows 2000, going to see if i can get that to work with the car.
the B5 S4 is like the mafia... there is only one way out!

Re: I finally got my vag-com cable to work!

Bump, need an answer from the guru's: I am running Vista OS, with the Keyspan USA-19HS usb adapter mated to the Vag-Com ISO cable. I followed the advice of running the program Ross-Tech 311 software as an administrator, but the following issues have come up:

    Specifying a Com Port:
    1) Com1: Inaccessible
    2) Com2: Inaccessible
    3) Com3: Com Port Status: OK Interface 5 Status: Modem!
    4) Com4: Com Port Status: OK Interface Status 3: Not found or not ready!

So, How can I set this up properly? FWIW: I am running a Lenovo X61.

    Thanks!

Re: I finally got my vag-com cable to work!

Ill can get it sometimes to work on vista but it always freezes right when I open the program. Ill have to try the run as administrator next time.

Re: I finally got my vag-com cable to work!

The main issue is that I am running an iso-com vag com the first cable made by rosstech in 2000 with the updated 311 software for iso.

Are you running a version newer than 409? I think he may be talking about running versions 311 and 409 on 64-bit windows. I have the same problem with versions 311 and 409.
