    Power Sun Shade DIY

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I submitted this to the DIY section, but I has not been approved yet.

    Parts Required:

    Rear Shelf
    Power Sun Blind
    Power Sun Blind Control Module
Screw for Sun Blind (Will be explained later in post)
    Connector to Sun Blind
    Sun Blind Button for Dash
    Connector to Button
Around 15ft of 3 Conductor Wire (I'd say at least 16 gauge)
    10 amp Inline Fuse

    Tools Required:

    Torx Screw Driver
Various Wiring Tools (crimper, stripper, ect)

    Estimated Time: 1-2 Hours

Here is a picture of the sun blind and module

You will need to couple the 3 conductor wire to the sun blind connector.

First you will need to remove the old rear shelf, start by removing the speaker grill, it will just pop off, you can use a flat blade screw driver if you cannot get your fingers under it, once the grill is off, there are 4 torx screws holding down the shelf, remove these.

Next, you will have to remove some interior pieces to get to the rear deck, first remove the upper trim panel.

Next, remove both rear grab handles. Pull down the screw covers and remove the 2 torx screws.

Now you will need to free the C-piller covers from the rear deck, they are held in by clips, so just pull them towards you and leave them loose. Remove the 4 torx screws pictured earlier. There also are about 4 clips that hold the rear shelf in, they are right behind the rear seats, just pull the shelf towards you to free them. Now you can remove the shelf. Have someone hold the C-piller covers up so that you do not scratch your old shelf on the way out.

Now that the old shelf is out, route your cable along side the brake light cable and down behind the trunk lining. You can route this cable to the front of the car many ways, I already had an amplifier wire ran to the trunk, so I followed that same path, but the wires need to end up in the dash.

Now you can re-install your brake light onto the new blind, and install your new sun blind equipped shelf in reverse order then reinstall your interior pieces.

Next, plug in the sun shade and brake light, and attach the sun blind to the car chassis using the screw. You can use the genuine Audi part which can be ordered from the dealership, I however had the perfect screw in my screw cozy.

Now you will need to power the blind, I ran a power cable (with 10 amp inline fuse) from the battery down to the drivers side kick panel, there is a also a good ground bolt here, you can test the blind by momentarily touching the trigger wire to the positive.

That's pretty much the hardest part, I will add the installation of the button to this writeup soon.

Sweet. I think they are the coolest. I've always wanted this feature but didn't find a car with it. My windows are tinted here in Vegas, so I don't think I would need it now. Thanks for the write-up though.

Bump. Has anybody else done an OEM power rear sunshade install?

I scored an OEM kit for it cheap, but I'm now learning that supposedly there is a control module necessary as well. I believe it's job is to know what position the sunshade is in or something, and make it so that the dashboard button works as a toggle on/off (aka extend/retract) switch.

Unless, maybe the control module is glued to the underside of the sunshade decklid? I'll check.

Dont forget, the OE rear sun shade has exactly 23 uses before it breaks.....Use incognito mode wisely. I think I have about 4 uses left =)

Hey it's better then the pop out cup holder. Those are designed for only 16 1/2 uses before they break.

my car came with the rear sunshade, it's pretty cool. i've had an issue with it for a while now though, it won't go back down by itself anymore. it seems like there is too much friction and it gets stuck after it starts to go down. I haven't gotten around to looking at it to find the sticking point and add a little grease, I imagine that's probably all it needs but does anyone have experience doing this?

Yeah i would love to know myself. I have a 2005.5, and mine is stuck in the up position, i would love to get it fixed. Since it has been broken, i've been unable to tint the rear glass. And do i need it, i live in sunny Miami Florida..

Mine refuses to work when the car has been sitting in the sun. Kind of ironic...

I have been able to make it go down manually, thanks to the fact that there is a delay between the time you hit the button and the time the little motor tries to pull the sunshade down. so if you get in the back seat, reach forward to hit the button, and then lean back again as quick as possible and push down on the shade to give it some assistance then it'll go down. If anyone has any tips on how to actually fix it, that would be great though

So I found out that the control module IS a part of the sunshade assembly, and its on the underside. I believe it is the little black plastic box.

Seriously though? Is it that unreliable? I got it for super cheap, so....
At least the manual OEM rear door card shades I got with it, can't fail because its manual...

I know of other luxury make/model cars with sunshades, and theirs have had absolutely zero problems even with high mileages..

All of the other electric luxury stuff in my B6 has made it to 100k, so I'm hoping this will work too...For example, my memory power heated seats, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and auto-folding reverse function mirrors (one tilts down when you reverse, to help see the curb when parallel parking)...

I'm not sure if this is a fix for the sunshade issues you guys have been having, but I couldn't help but notice the modification in the junkyard car. I looked under the sunshade/deck-lid before I pulled it from the car, and there were 3 balled up old T-shirts crammed underneath. One in center, and one per corner. My guess to why the previous owner did this, is because the huge weight of the sunshade assembly makes the fragile weak thin cardboard decklid material deform. I imagine that would alter the angle of the sunshade. What do you think?
