First major snowfall, couple of inches of snow, no big deal for blizzaks and quattro. Immediate difference, its amazing what a different compound makes.

Re: Snow tires + Quattro =

kind of depends on where you live.

most decent snow tires are also better on blacktop in the colder weather. Doesnt just need snow to be useful.

for example i lost pretty badly to a car with snow tires vs my summer in freezing temps.

    Annihilated off the line.

I live in salt lake city so snow is a normal thing for me. I was refering to treadwear as blizzaks are a very soft compound and wear away quickly if not driven on snow. I speak from prior experience.

Debbie downer, your raining on my snow tire parade. Traction and safety is a priority over tread life right now.

They do wear faster than Nokians and maybe other winter compound tires. I think maybe that was his point. But snow tires definitely are not a waste of money.

Its not ignorance, its experience. I've seem to manage to drive 9 years in a winter envorment with no accidents. One year with blizzaks and the rest on all seasons. Snow tires and quattro don't make up for bad driving skills.

Don't worry, 9 years driving as well , in Iowa, no accidents, but from your tone I doubt you've had very much fun

I was curious if people are familiar with their local laws on this. I heard of someone around here who just got his 240 going in the winter, took it out for a drive on summers, crashed and proceeded to not get his insurance because he didn't have the right tires for the conditions.

Dunno if it's true or not, but it's what I heard. Also I would assume that all season tires would be allowed in the winter.

Different states have laws that require snow tires or all season tires during certain months or certain weather conditions. Also chain laws if applicable.

What a difference winter tires make. I just put mine on the stockies the other day, and not a moment too soon. We just got another snowfall last night, to which I had no recollection of. I was just driving normally :)

Problem is you never know how much its going to snow. The roads where I live aren't usually too bad, but after last years snow storm, I'm not chancing it.

I'll post some pics of the snow and tires later today.

I dont consider myself a bad driver, but weather is something that is out of everyones control. I think its better to air on the side of caution. How well the roads are maintained is also a factor.

Either way, I love my blizzaks.

blizzaks are junk dude....their dry ride and traction is terrible compared to other cheaper tires on the market.

I have Blizzaks and I love them. As soon as the snow is gone for the season, the summer tires go back on. I've used the same set of Blizzaks for two winters, this will be the third, and I have yet to have an issue other than a nail in one of the tires. Blizzaks FTMFW!

The beauty of that statement will have my laughing for hours.

a vehicle (truck, car, van, I don't care what it is) coming to a stop on snow, will be able to stop more efficiently with snow tires than all-seasons. ABS or not, the name of the game is traction. This is why it's also recommended to run a skinnier tire in the winter than the summer.

True. But most M+S tires(maybe not high performance all seasons like the Falkens) will do in moderate snow. But belive me, I'm a huge advocate of snow tires if they are justified in your region for winter use.

    yep quattro+all seasons=beast

and yes me and him do live in places where it snows, a lot!

I went up to keystone co yesterday to ski and it handled like a champ. I pretty much had every season on the way up too, dry, wet snow, and packed snow. Im pretty impressed.

nitto neogens are not too expensive and they work great in the snow and in summer

Sorry to thread jack, but if anyone is looking for a set of great snow tires on a set of painted stockers, PM me.

To the OP, a few inches feels like a 'major' snowstorm. The first snow of the season always does!

True. But most M+S tires(maybe not high performance all seasons like the Falkens) will do in moderate snow. But belive me, I'm a huge advocate of snow tires if they are justified in your region for winter use.
It really does depend on the all season, and what you mean by "will do." The Falkens "did" for me last season, I didn't crash and didn't get stuck. They definitely didn't do near as well in the snow as my Maaxis v somethings all-seasons on my B6 quattro though and I'll probably be buying a dedicated set of snow tires to replace the Falkens when it comes time to use that car in the snow.

Again, depends on the all seasons. The Falkens were killer in the summer and handled the considerable road track use surprisingly very well. The Maaxis' on my B6 are not bad in the summer, but definitely softer than the stock high performance summer tires that they replaced (granted they are v-rated instead of Z)

I think all seasons have a place for some people in some locales, you just have to take in all the factors and decide case by case. Me personally, being in Utah, if I'm going to be running a high performance summer tire then I'm going to be buying a set of snow tires too. If not, I would go with my Maaxis tires again.

Re: Snow tires + Quattro =

Generally, snow tires > all seasons for driving in the snow, plain and simple. I don't understand what's so hard to comprehend about that. Now it's considered "overkill" to be safe? Right.... Sure you can get by just fine with all seasons in certain snow conditions, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't consider investing in some nice winters if you can. Certain traction limitations are just out of the drivers hand, no matter how good of a driver you are, whether it be awd, rwd, or fwd.

Here's a good comparison vid that tirerack did comparing the two...
