01 a4 1.8t turned off wont start Need Help!!!

hi, this is my frist post on audizine, i have an 01 a4 1.8t with apr stage 1. For a couple of weeks the car has been turning off on me while driving, maybe like one to two times a week but then started right back up. It through a check engine light but not when it turned off but then it went away after a couple of hours so i thought it was fine. By the way i think i was in need of a timing chain tensioner because the car would rattle when it started. So the other night while i was driving i noticed a loss in power that started the day before, i think the car went into limp mode but no CEL the car turned off it didnt make and noises i think i was in second or third gear driving normal. I tried to start the car but it would not start this time. I got the car towed to my house, took off the valve cover to check what was going on. I noticed that the timing chain was still on and looked fine, I also checked the tensioner which looked fine on top and bottom. I then took the timing belt cover off and the timing belt looked fine maybe just a little loose but not too much. I also checked for spark and put new plugs in, still no start. At this point i am really stumped and don't know what to look for any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance........

i dont knwo i know i should have checked it but i dont have a CEL checker or the time to go to advanced autho now im stuck! i just revised my post and added a loss of power from the night before it was raining out and i didnt have my bottom cover on, any link??

You checked all your fluids and wire connections etc...?
So no CEL when you try start the car...?

If you look in your owners manual, you should see a list of the CELs in there. See if you recognize it from those.

Have the alternator and battery checked at autozone or other auto service center. They can pull the code. ANYTIME you throw a CEL, you should get it checked. The symptom rarely goes away (like leaks: the do NOT get better).

You don't have time? Hubris- we can't help you remotely, and you haven't provided any clue as to the real problem. Get it towed, jumped, or whatever, but get it checked out by someone competent.

Def get the car scanned as you will have an intermittent code. That will lead you in the correct direction for proper diagnosis. And I do not know if the Autozone scanner will tell you if there is no CEL, but VAG Com will. Maybe post in the regional forum if anyone in your area will permit you to use thier VAG Com. There are many freindly people here on AZ.

yeah im starting to think now because it was raining the other day before i lost power and i didnt have the bottom cover under the car on because i just did an oil change, so im thinking now that i loss power while driving in the rain and the next day it turned off..... what do you guys think the odds that the speed or crankshaft sensor got messed up from the rain.... im just hoping that the timing belt and timing chain are good if they look good does it mean they are ok? also is there any further ways ot check to see if the belt or cahin are still good?

****UPDATE**** ok guys now im a little scared.. the timing belt looked fine i had mt brother try to start it and the cam didnt turn, but when i pushed a little on the belt i felt something trying to spin it..... any input???

so the engine is NOT cranking? what kinda sounds does it make when trying to start it. theres so many possibilities here..

****UPDATE**** ok guys now im a little scared.. the timing belt looked fine i had mt brother try to start it and the cam didnt turn, but when i pushed a little on the belt i felt something trying to spin it..... any input???

Get someone to look at it...

hey i finally found out what the problem is. What happened was the bottom crank pulley chewed off some teeth on the timing belt and just spins when you try to start it. My question now is if there is any engine damage?? the car didnt make any noise when it stoped would i maybe be safe??

very possible to have some bent valves. it just depends where the cams were when the timing belt got chewed up.
