GIAC releases VAG 2.0 TSI software with full switching!

After many months of R&D and product testing, GIAC is proud to announce the release of a host of performance calibrations for the VAG 2.0 TSI platform (ME 17 ECU). Switching options include Pump, Stock, Race, and Valet programming. GIAC’s version 4 Flashloader Handheld Switcher is compatible. Pump software delivers 28 - 38 HP and 70 - 80 Ft-lbs of TQ over stock; and, race gas software ratchets it up to 43 - 53 HP and 85 - 100 Ft-lbs of TQ over stock. (Ranges reflect differences in intake and exhaust upgrades as well as varying levels of premium and race fuel.) One would not know it from the smooth, satisfying drivability of this programming, but the road to release had a technically interesting curve.

We determined early on in the process that modifying only the maps of the ECU was relatively simple. We knew that the hard part of developing a product line for the ME 17 family of ECUs was writing software that would protect our proprietary calibrations from competitive interests and would feature the multi-program switching options that enthusiasts have come to expect from GIAC. Only a couple of companies (including GIAC) had had the ability to offer encryption or program switching for the older, more accessible MED9 TFSI computers. As a result of these more challenging objectives, a big part of the task, about 70% of the R&D time, was spent developing new tools and programs to completely disassemble the ME 17 controllers in the VAG 2.0TSI cars. Thanks to an impressive effort from GIAC’s engineering team, GIAC is now the first company to offer full software switching and encryption in its software for 2.0TSI applications.

The remainder of the development for this product line was similar to that of other GIAC software products. After the matters of file structure, encryption, and switching were sorted out, GIAC turned its focus to integrating the new product line into its distribution channel. GIAC supports over 200 distributors world wide with proprietary flashing tools and software created and developed in-house by GIAC. Supporting such a complex distribution network requires that new products are released and integrated seamlessly. GIAC engineers worked to incorporate ME17 flashing into the existing GIAC Serial Flash Programming Suite. Now with just an upgrade patch program, all GIAC distributors can flash 2008 and later VAG 2.0TSI cars with their existing GIAC flash cables. This flashing suite flashes the complete ECU (not just maps) through the OBD port. Flash installation (no soldering) leaves the ECU 100% in tact physically and visually. GIAC installers and factory OEM dealerships can flash over GIAC code at any time.

While GIAC programmers set about developing software switching and encryption, the calibration team went to work on the performance tuning. Using unencrypted single program files, the GIAC calibration team conducted numerous dynamometer tests using both 91 octane and 100 octane fuel on GIAC’s in-house 4WD Mustang dynamometer. In addition to baseline tests with a stock car, the team tested multiple programs for different upgrade scenarios, including GIAC software with stock hardware and GIAC software tuned for a performance intake and exhaust. Prototype programs based on in-house testing were road tested in selected Beta test vehicles. Beta-tested software was modified slightly based on driver feedback and final in-house dyno testing was completed.

The results of the final in-house testing are included here. The first plot includes dyno runs with 91 octane fuel. The second plot includes the same tests with 100 octane fuel. Three dyno runs are shown in each plot:
    * Stock software with stock hardware
    * GIAC software with stock hardware
    * GIAC software with VF intake and AWE-Tuning exhaust.

    Current ME17 computers covered are:

    GTI
1K0907115AD (CBFA with Stock, GIAC Pump, Race, and Valet options)
1K0907115AE (CCTA with Stock, GIAC Pump, Race, and Valet options)
1K0907115AF (CBFA with Stock, GIAC Pump, Race, and Valet options)

    A3
8P0907115M (CBFA with Stock, GIAC Pump, Race, and Valet options)
8P0907115Q (CCTA with Stock, GIAC Pump, Race, and Valet options)

More ECU's to be covered by early next week.

GIAC is proud of its new software product line for TSI applications. For a limited time, from Tuesday December 9th through Tuesday December 23rd, GIAC will offer a free stock option and Flashloader Handheld with purchase of our GIAC pump performance calibration for 2.0TSI computers that we support. Enjoy!

    Congrats and great numbers!

If only the Audi ECU companies (GIAC, APR, Revo, etc) would release some sort of user tuning tool, for those of us that prefer to write our own maps. Cobb's StreetTuner and ProTuner products were awesome.
