    Should I replace my starter?

As you guys know I'm in the middle of my stage 3 install, which is a giant pain in the ass, and I need some opinions of those who have done it.

Should I replace my starter and possibly my alternator? I wasn't planing on doing it, but then in the stage 3 write up I'm using the guy said his started died one month after his stage 3 install and now I'm freaked out. So should I replace it or am I cool leaving the original? I don't have one so I might have to buy one from the stealership or add another week to my install.

Re: Should I replace my starter?

I would skip on replacing both items now because there's nothing wrong with them and if they decide to go out, the motor does not need to be pulled in order to place those items, but I would def change the rear main seal at this time though.

You can replace the starter from underneath, I took off my bumper/headlights, undid all the bolts to the core support, then slid it forward about 3 inches (zip tieing it so it didn’t fall on me) and the whole ordeal took about 3 hours. Not a big deal with this car right? I say if it works then leave it.

Re: Should I replace my starter?

I was in the same situation recently, but decided against replacing them both. Because the cost started to add up with the Stage III, so I figured why occur an unneeded expense? I just plan on replacing them when they go.

Anyone know where to get good prices for a new starter or alternator?
    SOLD: Stage III

034 Motorsports had some good prices when I called them.

Thanks for the advice everyone. The cost of this and the million metric tools I have bought are adding up so I am going to not replace them.

Re: Should I replace my starter?

If you know a local rebuilder, get him to replace the brushes, I know a guy who could do it for $40 each. going out and spending over $500 on something that may or may not fail is excessive.
the B5 S4 is like the mafia... there is only one way out!
