in your mt b7's, would you,

    -put in neutral & brakes

-put it in lower gears, not letting them rev too high & less braking

just wondering people's habits up there :)
    thanks for sharing in advance!!!
    much appreciated!

ps. slippin' into lower gears will consume more gas... right?? even when you let off the gas pedals
    saves... some brakes...

    Re: when you're going downhill

Depending solely on neutral/brakes to stop or reduce speed when going downhill is not a very safe driving habit.

On a constant downhill, you literally ruin your brakes without engine braking.

Engine braking is also more fuel efficient.

    True story.

No power to the wheels = no quattro

how is going down a hill in gear more fuel efficient?

not like your burning gas as if your foot was on the pedal but it seems if the engines turning more, it needs more fuel/oil to lubricate it.

I don't think it's a very good idea to roll on neutral on a Quattro.

Your engine stops firing when you engine brake.

I know it sounds weird. It's almost like a conspiracy. But really is a true statement.

ohhh alright it makes sense to me. instead of the fuel powering the engine now the wheels are turning the engine. is this what happens on automatic cars too? i assume so

Instead of hitting the brake you guys should really try stepping on the accelerator.

    Re: when you're going downhill

Cheapest way to make your A4 an RS4:

1- Download audio clip of rs4 WOT in cabin.
2- Find the steepest lengthiest road in your area and get to the top.
3- Take it downhill at WOT with the audio clip playing in background.

    Enjoy you're RS4!

I grew up using neutral whenever gravity is pushing you down, that said, if I'm going down a twisty road, then I'm always using the engine and the brakes.

    Re: when you're going downhill

If you are looking for fuel efficiency down hill, then leave the car in gear. When the car is coasting in gear and the rpm's are above about 1500 then the fuel injectors stop injecting fuel into the cylinders (this is where you will notice on your MFD that the instant mpg readout goes from numbers to ---). If you are coasting down a hill in neutral, then you engine is basically at an idle speed of about 800-900 rpm's. Granted this uses very little fuel, but you will actually use less fuel with the car in gear. In regards to what causes the least wear and tear, there are way to many variables to make a good argument on either side.

    Re: when you're going downhill

    I'm with this guy.

I'm almost always in gear. Engine braking doesn't put any detectable amount of wear on your engine. Your engine is designed to rev high and there's absolutely no problem with engine braking down hills at 3k or even higher. If you rev match properly you're not burning your clutch or creating any additional wear on your drivetrain when you make a quick, smooth downshift. I'm in gear 99% of the time, it doesn't feel right when I'm in neutral unless i'm stopped.

As others have said - if your foot isn't on the gas pedal, you're not burning gas. That's why your car slows down - your wheels are turning the engine and the friction slows your car. Idling your engine uses a small amount of gas to maintain that idle.

    +1

Your car uses no fuel when coasting in gear...Idle is inefficient and is actually hurting your gas mileage. Plus, coasting in neutral is just a bad idea...might as well keep your awd audi in control and make sure, if need be, you can put power down if an emergency arises.

    Re: when you're going downhill

if u know how to downshift and engine break there is no extra wear on the clutch. They key is rev match and heal toe into a lower gear. I have perfected that in the rs4 and the car doesn't bog or anything. Still I would put in nuetral downhill and let her roll

neutral's just... doesn't feel safe... and I wanna save fuel too haha...
and when urgent... if im in gear... i can always accelerate and whatnot.
