Unhappy well it's official... it's a total loss...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
the insurance has officially told me that it was considered as a total loss, and they aren't even going to bother working w/ me trying to avoid a salvage title... they're even being extremely difficult letting me buying it back from them...

so i'm not quite sure what my next move should be...

if B8A4 2.0T Avants were available in 6 speeds, i'd get one... i've even been considering getting a tiptronic, but given that i'm a manual driver, i know i'd get bored after a while... so i'm not going to spend $50k in a car that i'm not sure i'll fully enjoy...

fixing the Avant is still an option despite the fact the insurance peeps are being difficult... but then it will have a salvage title on it, and i'm a little worried what the insurance cost is going to be... plus if i get into another one of these accidents the cash value of the car will obviously much less than a clean titled car... but then again once it's fixed i know exactly what i'm getting back, a car that is set-up exactly how i want it to be...

the other option is to part out the Avant and get something else... but what... and how will it compare to the Avant?

this sucks... i just don't know what to do...

The damage doesn't seem all that bad, I'm surprised they're totaling it!

If you can buy it back for the right price, I'd do that and fix it. So what if it's a branded title, you'll basically be getting to sell it twice!

This is no good. I am sorry to hear about this. I hope things turn out well.

I do have to agree with Darrick. Do your best to buy it back. It should not be much to fix it (hood, core support, rad?, front end, etc..). Then you'll be all set. THEN, you either switch insurance or adjust your coverage so that if anything happens in the future you'll be properly taken care of, despite there being a 'salvage title'. My friend did that with his B5 S/C'd 2.8. The damage was 10x worse than yours (we had to get the frame bent back and realigned). damn drunk drivers...

I hate to be 'that guy' but.... if the Avant does get parted I would be interested in the interior. I want a black interior.

Talk to the insurance and see what they say about having the car insured as salvage title (cost, coverage etc) then make the decision to buy back. From the pics of the damage I think I would most definitely buy it back if I was as happy with my car as you are.

Yup we bought one car back in our family for $300....plus we got $5,000 on top of that.

car was a 110000 miles 2002 cavalier...worth like $3K....so I dont know why they gave us $5k but we werent going to argue..

I would definitely buy it back....when I talked to my (actually is was the other guys) adjuster he said it was our "right" to have first dibs on the car.....

you obviously don't want to get rid of it. so if you can buy it back and get it fixed the value lost for a salvage title is kind of moot since it sounds like you'll want to keep the car as long as its worth anything anyway.

not sure if this is even a possibility but...

take ALL of "your" parts off the car (black headliner, steering wheel, doorblades, engine mods...) take the insureance money (assuming you are getting any) and pick up another b6 avant. I have seen a few lately that are pretty cheap. I can't imagine being able to fix yours for much less than a new one.

front bumper, hood, fender, headlight, airbag$$, radiator, paint... seems like you'd be up to the cost of a new ride pretty quick. maybe you can even find one with the same paint color?

you'd be back with a new-to-you car that is still basically what you wanted your old car to be. no salvage title and may one with fewer miles even.

    good luck.

Vulturism aside I'd do what you can and buy the car back and keep it.

If you can't then part it all out, find a clean stock one and put it all into that new one.

As for the manual vs automatic, you'll hate yourself if you get an automatic.

I bought an automatic e30 cabrio, took one long road trip, came home and bought a manual version immediately.

Steph, here is an option: let the damn ass insurance company total the car, you buy the totaled car back. get yourself some shit box to beat around while you search for another clean Avant, this time try 6speed then swap everything over.
it's not too hard to find whatever you want. besides, your denim avant is getting high up in the mileage department.
I would do this if I totaled my car. your wrecked car will have a lot of parts you can use for spare or for sale purposes.

Being in a very similar situation my self, I bought my car back for a tiny bit over 1,000. With the mods I had it is worth it to me. Not knowing your car, but reading that you had quite a bit done, I would definitely buy it back. Find another Avant and swap everything. Im looking for another S so i can do the same thing. Take you time and find the right car or you wont be satisfied. I went last weekend to test drive Grand Cherokees and Dakotas to see if i could switch over to something "more practical." Lets just say Im buying another S4 and that is final.

Good luck with your situation and hope it works out for your best interests.

Just looked at some of the accident pictures, and wow. They totaled it for that? I wish mine was like that.

Hell yeah. We can be out there in no time. I've driven to CO with a co-pilot in the past and I think it only took us just inside of two days to get to Crested Butte... in a '91 Jetta GL with over 200k on the odometer. The Avant is a nicer drive

Speaking of a clean stock one... Charlie is selling his white B6 Avant 1.8TQM.

definitely try to keep it and buy it back from the insurance.

I would not keep a car declared totaled by the insurance company, main reason coz it will sell for really cheap when time comes. Like most said; buy it from back, get another avant, and swap the parts over.

And for those wanting to buy the OP's interior or whatever, I would want to see your own reactions when this happens to your own car and others are talking about driving to you only to rip off as many nice parts as they can have then take them home with them. It was never to actually to meet you, but to see your own car going away with them.

This thread turned to a racing how to buy parts from a totaled car, not from a scrap yard, but from a fellow AZiner. This is so cheap, selfish, and disgusting.

I would be devistated but would buy my car back and either 1) fix it or 2) part it out and move onto my next project.

I mean no disrepect to Steph and I hope he understands that. I would love to see his vehicle fixed and operational with him behind the wheel again.

Re: well it's official... it's a total loss...

This thread turned to a racing how to buy parts from a totaled car, not from a scrap yard, but from a fellow AZiner. This is so cheap, selfish, and disgusting.
I'd actually consider it a complement if people were fighting for the parts off my car.

And I am sure everyone here would rather see him rebuild the car than to ever get a part off of it.

I would buy it back in a New York Second...

The repair looks easy....Steph has over $50K in mods done to this car, it is unique and one of a kind...

On a whole different level than any other car on here..

Re: well it's official... it's a total loss...

okay so here are the numbers as of today... i plan on fighting them to death on the Actual Cash Value of the Avant as i believe they're low-balling me:
    - cash value: $16.5k
    - settlement: $17.5k
    - buy-back: $4.3k

so at the end of the day i'll get about $13k from the insurance and my car back... i'll get the Avant back, make no mistake about it, even if i need to get a layer involved.

now we know based on the estimates of damages what it would cost to repair them:
    - front: $14.5k
    - rear: $1.5k

so if i was to repair the Avant it would cost me over $16, probably closer to $20k... i'm really sad to say this, but it would not be financially responsible to invest another $20k more in the Avant and be on the road w/ a car that has a highly depreciated cash value being a salvage which would most likely put me on the hook for the repairs of any other accidents, and God forbid i have others...

i believe i'm slowly coming to the realisation that i need to move on from this particular car.

as of now i'm considering getting a used S4 Avant, either a B6 or a B7... at least i can look at it as somewhat of a step up, compare to what i had, slap on after-market suspensions, exhaust, bi-xenons and i'm all set... i might be also be able to transfer some of the parts i currently have over, like at the very least the wheels, the floor mats (), the nav and other little bits & pieces...

i considered getting another 1.8T Avant, but right now i'm not interested in transferring over all the parts just to try to match the original Avant... if i do that i think i'll always look back and regret the old one...

so on to searching for an S4 Avant... i think i want a black on black w/ silver alcantara inserts...
