18's in front 19's in back

Anyone ever put 18's in the front and 19's in the back. I know some cars come stock like this and was wondering how it looks and if it would cause any problems.

That's an awesome question. I was just thinking about doing this. I'm thinking 17" OEMs upfront and 18" BBS CH on the rear.

It will look hella ugly, but I believe you can do it with the right tire sizes.

why would you do it? you dont have a rear wheel drive car.... nor are you really going to make it look good. you COULD do it with proper tire sizes and what not.. but to be honest you know you will not end up doing it. cause everyone here will say no no no, and speaking in reality.. you wont do it. you just wont. so save a thread and give it to a member who needs it for a question that serious.

actually I believe alot of people think it looks good, including me if it's done right, but cars with Quattro or AWD for that matter will not like this....so it's a bad idea.

one reason, the rotating mass on the front axle and the rear axle is different, the drivetrain system will not like it.

oh no dont get me wrong. on the right car it looks damn good. and ona RWD car it looks good. for example a porsche, the 350z, or CLK55 AMG Black series, yes those high end/very sporty looking cars can pull it off. putting bigger wheels in the rear... on a a4... eh. not going to look good. and like Maverick said.. the drivetrain is not going to like it.. you could do it with the proper calculations.. but like i said before. the OP is not going to end up doing it. so why even ask. its obvious.

Re: 18's in front 19's in back

Rotational mass is different as well when you run a wider tire in the rear. Often times people do run 19x8.5 in the front, and 19x9 or even 9.5... Same thing, different weight for the wheels = different rotating mass, and its just fine. With the correct tire sizes, it can be done. The only thing thing you should be more concerned about is the rolling diameter of the wheel.

So for instance, 18'sx8.5 in the front with 235/40/18 tires the equivalent in the rear would need to be 235/35/19 if you wish to run 19's in the back. I'd think you'd be alright, but I'll let others chime in.

3% difference there in diameter. I wouldn't do it, but I guess it might be ok.

Less then 5% is usually what they aim for. Some call it safe and keep it at 3%, however i've never had experience in this regard. I'd keep everything the same. Maybe Darrick will chime in.

    Hola!

Long story short: NO, you can't do it.

Longer version: YES, you can do it, IF you do it correctly, but your car will look stupid.

In order to do it correctly, you'd need to properly match the tires. Let's say you want to do an 18x8.5 in the front and 19x8.5 in the rear. To properly match the rotating diameters (you want less than a 5% difference, but I highly recommend you not go more than 3% to just be on the safe side, I usually keep my staggered tires within 1.5% to be extra safe).

So, continuing my example, you would want a 235/40/18 in the front and a 235/35/19 in the rear to properly match the rotating diameters (.28% difference for those curious). This is fine, your Quattro will be happy with this, but your car will look retarded since you'll have sidewalls that are 1/2 and inch taller in the front so it will look like you have balloon tires in the front and rubber bands in the rear.

Some of you guys are very helpful, some not so much. What I am hearing is it is %100 doable but has a side effect of looking wrong. I am still considering this and would like to know what difference lowering springs would make. I would want to lower the car as little as possible (I believe Neupeed has this reputation).

any more feedback would be great.

Re: 18's in front 19's in back

lowering springs will not make you happy. why, you can't slam your car. NS race springs can do it with O2 sport suspension
if you can't match the weight on the front wheel and the rear wheel as well as tires, then don't.
I see why some might want to do this. when you slam the car so the fenders are sitting on the tires or barely above the tires(the bottom of your car is parallel to the ground, instead of the rear being a little bit higher), the rear wheels looks smaller than the front.
so running 18" front and 19" rear will make the car looks even in any angel.

do all your calculations and do it right.

I am still against this idea.

Re: 18's in front 19's in back

lets be honest. not to be an asshole. it is do-able. but it will look like shit and whats the point? like i said you wont do it. buying different tires and wheels for the front and rear and all that hassle. i think you have to worry about a little more things. it looks from our avatar and history you have a pretty bone stock car. which is fine. so trying to pull off a very sport aggressive look like this.... please having something other than a stock car to back it up.. and springs? springs? atleast hop on the Vmaxx group buy.. because springs.. and stock body and that setup= fail.

not to burst your bubble.. but really. and god forbid calculations are wrong blah blah.. and your screw up your drivetrain.. and the dealership does not cover you and tells you to eff off... then what you going to do?

think about al the factors.... running that whole 235/35 and 265/30 has been tested, then the same with 225 front and 235 rear etc etc etc.. but this different wheels size has not.. do you want ot be the test dummy that blows his drive system over that? and for what? i think you should concentrate in other aspects of the car then taking leap like that.

oh and also you did ask... wondering how this would look and if it would casue problems.. .by people saying is this a joke, and god it woudl be ugly blah blah. is telling you it woud look like shit.. and it could work.. but has not been tested and i doubt you want to be the test dummy.. just my two cents that im adding in here while sitting at work. good luck.. and like i said. im being honest and not trying to be an asshole. but next time just search a little bit regarding the drive system. once again good luck and happy modding.

Re: 18's in front 19's in back

Yeah with the car lowered and the staggered sizes it is noticeably strange. I found a deal where I could get a set of 2x18's and 2x19's for the same price so I was curious. I might do it, take some real (none pshop) photos and let everyone see how this would work.

But don't assume that I wouldn't, you know everything and that my car is bone stock. Maybe I am some young money millionaire and could gives a flip if my Audi starts to peel in half due to my rims.
