    4300 vs. 6000 HIDs

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I had just ordered a set of 6k HID bulbs last week and got them installed tonight. I figured I would set up a comparison for whoever cares. By the way, these are the ones from http://www.ddmtuning.com/hidkihidbuhi.html as posted in this thread http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...&highlight=HID

    After install:

Going out for a drive now to see if there is any noticeable loss in actual light output compared to the OEM.

You can just get 6000k 35watt bulbs, which is what I have and I love them. Take the ugly yellowing out of the light.

Yeah, I just got the 35w D2S bulbs for $30. I would have gotten the 55w kit but I've been putting a lot of $$$ into this car lately.

So far I really like these lights. Around town and stuff the light looks brighter/sharper (I'm assuming just due to the color change) but once I got out were it was dark all around I noticed that it's not as easy to see far away. Saying that, I would normally have my high beams on anyway in that situation so I'm really liking them. The color just looks cleaner than stock, no more yellow!

Third from the bottom. Looks like they are only $25 now! You have to go to the pulldown and find the right lights, It starts on H1.

The higher K you go, the less actual light output there is. 4300k and 5000k have the same light output. 5000 is more of a pure white and that is what i went with on my Evo. 5000k is the highest K you can go without losing output

^2nd. The higher number refers to the color spectrum, not the output capacity (wattage)... I'm also not sure how zenon bulbs "wear out"

i mean, HIDs have a certain lifetime. they are only supposed to last so many hours. but usually that is ALOT of hours.

BTW, my Ecodes with stock HIDs are BRIGHT!

    I wouldn't go higher than OEM 4300k.

I've heard folk running 4500k, but have no idea of lighting output.

There's a reason OEM cars tend to be 4300k. They've put in a lot of research, and I doubt manufacturers spend billions on R&D just for the sheer fun of it.

Right, I guess what I meant was HID's don't usually get dimmer they just burn out all together. Mind you zenon gas does break down after a while, but as you mentioned, it's supposed to be a very LONG time.

I have a feeling most people's lens covers become chipped/dull and that's what makes them look dim...

They don't spend billions on R&D on things like bulbs. I'm sure they go with a bulb manufacturer that offers the lowest price for equipping all their cars.

I think I'm going to get the regular ballasts with up graded 55w at 5000k, for $70 that is a deal, and for $15 more upgrade the high beams. Can't beat that both with a lifetime warranty.

Like I said, the light output when it's dark is a bit lower at distance but it's not as bad as I thought it would be, you would normally put on you high beams in that situation. Also, all cars come with all different temp lights. I think my buddies 03 A4 stock has 6K in them and see a lot of bimmers with what look like 8K's or higher. I think if you got the 6k in 55w it would be great!

I was thinking the 5k must be a perfect white for optimal vision at night. I could only imagine with 55w.

The slim DDMs are plug and play. All you need to do is get the D2S adapter on that page. All you do then is remove the stock 35W ballast, and put the slim DDM ballast in it's place. You'll need to find something (like a sheet of plastic) to cover the hole, though, since the stock ballasts function as a headlight seal, whereas the DDMs don't.
