LS1 Engine swap into my avant?...

I don't believe it would be that bad. LS engines are physically small engines and there would be absolutely no problem stuffing one under the hood of an A6. You'd need custom motor and tranny mounts and a custom driveshaft. The problem you would have is getting the engine to communicate with the instrument cluster. In fact, I can guarantee you'd be scraping your existing cluster and rigging up aftermarket guages. Also, depending on the year of your A6 you may run into problems with the CAN network. With that said, getting the engine in the car and running would not be that difficult. Plus, you can pick up LS1s for pennies these days. With an intake, exhaust, mild cam and AFR heads you'd be making 450whp all day long. Let us know when your done :)

The 4.2 doesn't make any power and I can only imagine how much that engine would cost.

You would use the T56 6-spd that originally mates to the LS1 and make a transmission mount that utilizes the stock bolt holes. I have no idea where the gear shifter would end up, but I'm sure it sould be close enough to work. Plus, if the car was a manual to begin with then you've already got your clutch pedal and hydraulics.

Do it, The engine mounts aren't that much different than the V6's, just a bit wider.

You could make it RWD and use the T56 out of the F-body(custom driveshaft), otherwise you're going to need a bellhousing adapter made.

You can pick up an engine & trans out of a Camaro for a decent price these days. The ECU's are pretty easy to tweak with HP Tuners as well.
My roommate and I built a 425whp/400wtq LS1 during college. It wasn't slow.

I was going to agree.. because I was going to think about the cosworth V8 in the RS6. but then I remember it costs a few quarters to get several hundred HP out of a LS1.. so it'd be soo much cheaper in the long run with the LS it would make it worth the extra effort.
