Weird sound when I turn off the car...

Hey guys, just curious if this is common; I've never heard a car do it before, but whenever I turn off my 3.0, it starts making a sound like a jet shutting off, or something to that effect. I know I'm not explaining it worth crap, but I guess that's the closest thing I can compare it to. It seems like the engine still has a ton of rotational momentium, and is slowly spooling down. Does anyone know what it might be, or if it's common for our cars to be doing it????

My parents 3.0 does that as well. i think its normal

Well, at least you know what I'm talking about them.... but still. No car I've had before does anything like that. Or, if it does, it's no where near as loud.

if im not mistaken its your vent motors still moving, sometimes(most of cars) they go bad and never stop moving

Hmm... I'll have to see if it makes a difference when I turn off the heater. I don't think I've ever noticed a difference though.

My 3.0 makes this noise as well when the car is turned off, if there was a problem with this I am sure I would have found it out a while ago. So I assume it is normal, or hope so!

as i said, most likely its your vent motors, and you wont hear them moving unless you car is off and its near silent in your car

AC shutting down thats all if you press econ you should find it wont do it

I think it's normal also, regardless of you have AC on or not. I always turn my air off few miles before I reach and still hear that jet engine shutdown noise when I turn it off. Especially if I still leave the key in and don't open the doors, it's really noticeable. But I think it's normal for 3.0.

I have a 1.8T and I hear the same thing on mine when I turn off the motor, so I don't think it's just in the 3.0's.

my VR6 used to do this all the time. It does it for like 2 minutes and then shuts off. I know the exact sound you're describing. It's pretty loud too. I remember my gf got out once and was like "you're car is still running??". So yeah it's normal.

That noise is the A/C condenser fan spinning down. Totally normal.

my VR6 used to do this all the time. It does it for like 2 minutes and then shuts off. I know the exact sound you're describing. It's pretty loud too. I remember my gf got out once and was like "you're car is still running??". So yeah it's normal.

On the VR's the aux water pumps a electric water pump that runs coolant through the head after the motor is shut off runs. On my GTi for some reason it runs for a minute or so after the motor is shut off. Longer then normal but its not a bad thing.

I have a 1.8T, it does the same. It kinda sounds like a turbine shutting off. It actually kinda sounds cool I think. Anyway, mine has always done that.

1.8T also, and mine only does it after a long or hard drive, I always thought it was normal.

ONce i was riding with my friends, we get to our destination spot and i park and shut off the car. then i say "hey whats that u guys hear that" knowing that my car was about to do the turbine sound all they said when they heard it was "WOOOAAHHHH MAN THAT SOUNDE JUST LIKE A 747" hahahah I WAS CRACKING UP

Yeah another 3.0 owner with that sound here too! I have always thought of it as being normal. However as for it being the vent motors, I am pretty sure that is a different noise. When I kill my engine and sit in the car while it is very quiet I can hear clicking noises and such, I think those are the vent motors. The sound the original poster is describing is more like a turbine winding down haha.

oh, well ok. It sounds the exact same as what he was describing so i figured it was just a characteristic of german V6 engines. As my mom's C230 did the same thing as well.

But yeah it sounds like a fan or something running and it sounds like a jet engine. Eventually when it turns off it makes that winding down sound and everything. Never knew exactly what it was. Good to know though.

Ok idk if its the same noise but my 02 3.0 does it when I started cold for 15 seconds and then after a min it does it again for 15 seconds than it stops any ideas or is the same thing?

I always thought this sound was the SAI pump.

But what do I know...

Blower motor disengaging and blend door motors returning to their park position...thats all it is.

I have 2005 1.8t and I would hear that sound thinking my turbo was going bad...sounds like a turbien winding down and up...I hear it when the car is on sitting and when I turn it off...is that a problem?

Everyone hit it spot on, its the fan spinning down. Nothing to be worried about

This is the best answer. Pretty much every B6 I've ever been in has this sound.
