i can tell you my uncles a detective....you make good friends mone, some will tell you that it sucks but its up to you....plus you can retire in like 20 years....

The salary isn't worth it but there's allot of OT. Try LI or CT the pay is better. I work in CT and one of my coworkers worked for NYPD and said that coming to CT was his best move. Two of my other friends currently work for NYPD and are looking to transfer out.

Def. don't use NYPD as your first option. Try for Westchester County's next police exam. You live in Danbury, take the Danbury PD exam when they have it again. I took the last one. Apply in Norwalk and Stamford as well.

your better off with westchester. NYPD makes 25,100 a year. there was a news report about most of them being on welfare to help take care of their families (ones with multiple kids).

i make about $42k before taxes annually. im looking to hit top pay after working for 5 years. its gonna be $91k before taxes and thats without overtime! im having a great time because i work with great people at my precinct. like they say, "you have front seats to the greatest show on earth!". think about it, if its really what you want then you should go for it! good luck!

We all wish we could get paid 12 months of the year and work only 11. That 90K is b4 overtime and as a regulaur street piglet. Average yearly pay at top pay is much more then that.Thats the problem with out economy and why Verizon will soon be farming out residential Fios jobs to contractors. I wish I could be paid near full pay to not build a car for a week, but I also realize if I did so my job is gonna be the first one 2 go when its budget time. Theres this feeling of entitlement that is gonna sink a good number of union jobs real soon. Good luck.

I actually took the exam and finished all paperwork for the jan09 class but being that they cancelled the class due to budget cuts, I was told by my investigator that I should call and check for july class since my paperwork transfers.

i really dont believe that theyre gonna cancel. the citys gonna find hidden budget money like usual. im thinking that youre going to be notified my your investigator 3 days ahead of time to drop everything and report to queens college the following monday. dont take my word for it but thats what happened to me because my class was supposed to be canceled also. Its funny you guys say you make 90k before taxes. My cousin has been on the force for at least 5.5. years and he isn't making 90k a year. He did mention getting some retroactive checks this year. So that combined with his OT he made 70k this year. Suffolk county cops make way more to start, they're the highest paid in the nation.

Yea, I have a buddy that is in the NYPD academy right now and that's exactly what he said...that the next class is canceled

theres a class in january of only 250 recruits. good news because id hate to hear if they were going to lay off cops. crime rate will go thru the roof. if anything happened to us and needed a cop, dont hold your breath because theres going to be less man power to "answer the call".

I'm fluent in Arabic and have over 100 college credits... what do you guys think my chances are? and when?

it's hard to say, it depends on a number of factors...my brother-in-law has been a NYC cop for about 5 years now, and he likes it (mind you, he is in a really good area and is now apart of a special devision)...i would say your chances are probably pretty good, and the city takes a lot of officers into each class, but where u end up after is a big "?"...OT is key, and make friends with the fellow officers and "higher-ups" is essential...gl, and keep us posted on what happens
