    snow tire questions

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm about to put my snow tires on my S4 and am wondering if i should put the ones with less tread up front or in the back? dont know how these AWD systems ware out tires.

Also would you guys recommend a 225 or a 235 tire on our cars? I know factory is 235 but i've heard with snows its better to go narrow so you cut into the snow as opposed to "hydroplaning" over it.

threadwear should be identical on both front and back, or it might ruin your transmission or quattro system.

you want the better on the front... Reason is that you cant go anywhere without the ability to stear... Also for winter, you are right. The thinner the better.

Stop scaring people, like the post above me as long as the rolling diameter is close you will be ok. The Quattro on the B6 and I believe early B7 S4's is 50/50 so it kind of won't matter where you put the tires.

How much less tread ? I ask because if the rears have very little tread then swapping ends when you least expect it will not be fun ...

    hahahahaha....this is a little dramatic

my car is 60% power to the rear and 40% to the front....if I wear out my rears faster, will my Quattro system fail too?

    please.

    Re: snow tire questions

I thought all the Quattros were 40:60, are some 50/50 all the time?

    - suppose mine will wear out even faster now that I have the 4:1 Stassis center diff? ;) joking...

According to Stassis, compared to stock it grabs even more up front going into corners but then more rear bias coming out. Basically depends on how much you're on the throttle.

Rotating tires will negate any of that though.

    Re: snow tire questions

Put the best tread up front...stopping and turning are more important. Plus with the 04, I think you're 60/40 split. As for 225 vs 235, I'd go 235 to maintain your load rating. With 225, you'll increase rim damage risk and the difference in width is negligible.

On the 2005.5 B7, the split was still 50/50, as it was before that. The 2006s and above are all 40/60 though.

Since hes 60/40 REAR/FRONT, it would seem you're arguing two different points. Yes turning/braking is possibly more important, so you might be better to put them in front. However, the 60% bias towards the rear would also mean you'd get more use out of having the better tires in the rear... Luckily for you, the 04 means you're 50/50 so don't concern yourself with that

    Re: snow tire questions

i can barely notice a difference in the tires... nothing to big at all... and 235 it is for the load ratings..

I also want that center diff..

Im a huge fan of Dunlop M3 snows... Any recommendations on other snow tire brands?

    Re: snow tire questions

I'm quite satisfied with my Pirelli Snowsports. Don't have much experience with other snowtires, however, but the snowsports have got very good ratings on tire rack, and they're working great for me.

You miss understand...60 front/40 rear on the 04 B6. Went to 50/50 later, then 40/60 with the latest B7.

im going to have to disagree with the first thing you said.... the 04 B6 is 50/50.... Audi would never install front bias differential in a front heavy already understeering beast
