    Power Steering Flush and quotes

Bear with me if I sound like a complete idiot when it comes to mechanics, I pretty much am.

A mechanic recommended I get my "fluids changed" after some recent work. He said it'd be around $250. I assumed this meant coolant, brake fluid, and power steering. My friend who's an aspiring mechanic estimated 2.5 hours labor for all three, putting it exactly in line with the quote.

I called a reputable shop here in LA where I go to school (original quote was in Seattle) and they said $95 for coolant, $100 for brakes, $250 for power steering.

Is there something special about a 1.8T B5 that would require around 2 hours of labor for a power steering flush? I'd prefer my friend do it, unless it's something special since he doesn't know proprietary Audi stuff.

There's a write up on audiworld. It's not that hard to do yourself, the power steering that is. Brakes take some time doing the old fashioned way and you are supposed to cycle the ABS pump with a VAG-COM

I'm just going to have the shop do the brakes and coolant since I need it done before I drive up.

I can only find power steering upgrades and repairs at http://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/2299748.phtml.

Re: Power Steering Flush and quotes

Bro, I flushed my power steering in in about 45 min in my S4, I used a NAPA turky baseter style tool and a can of fluid, and a can to catch the old fluid, here is what I did:
Sucked the old fluid out of the fill tank, toped it off with new ( don't over fill real easy to do) and ran it for 5 min, sucked the fluid out again and repeated with a fill and 5 min run, after a coule of times the old was out and the new looked good, it is not the best way but alot better than pulling a the cooler line and draining it out that way, but to each is there owen on to how they work there car, good luck and make sure you get the right fluid for the job, my local NAPA had it.

for the coolant pop off your lower rad hose and let it drain, then refill, for the brakes open all the bleeders let them gravity bleed for 10 minutes then to a couple manual bleeds on each caliper and refil the master for the ps take the return line off the bottle and let it drain then refill. it will take you an hour and give a buddy a 6 pack for helping. easy as cake. the shop prob has the BG flush machines thats why it is so much. it will save you some money if thats what youre looking to do

p/s ch11s for the ps fluid, dot 4 for the brake fluid and g12 for the coolant :) good luck
    i heart my s4
