    Odd staggered question

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I know is might sound odd, but given our front mount engines and tendency to understeer, would it make sense to run a slightly wider tire in the front? like a 255 in the front and a 245 in the back for example, just pulled those numbers out of the air. that way the slightly more rubber would add a bit more grip to help fight off the understeer?

or would it not make a difference? or would it be bad for the quattro?

    any thoughts?

    Re: Odd staggered question

I don't know if it would help much if at all. It might look kind of odd. Better off just getting a thicker/stiffer rear sway bar to help fight off the understeer. RS4 rear sway bar worked pretty well for me, i'm guessing an even thicker aftermarket RSB might reduce it even more. RSB is probably mroe cost efficient too.

    Re: Odd staggered question

in all seriousness Yes but there are better ways to improve balance.

I would run a stiffer rear sway bar first, in fact i have the S4 bar on my car right now. and i will slide the rear out ever so slighlty with my snow tires and wet pavement.

tire pressures are another simple way to dial the car in

and obioulsy a suspension kit will allow proper corner weights.

    on a side note
GM staggered the tires on the the pontiac GTP? or GTX? im not sure what one but it was the last v8 Front drive. the concept works in physics, but looks funny.

would you even see 10 or 15mm? but agreed, a rear sway and nice coils would probably work better. just wondered if it would actually make a difference at all

depending on the rim width, chances are your front tires would be flush with your rim and your rears would look slightly stretched. i have 235s on an 8.5" rim and its noticably stretched. i've also seen 245s on an 8.5" rim and they're pretty much flush to the rim. it may be noticeable from certain angles.

It does look a little odd to have your wheels reverse staggered, but I hear this is a popular thing with the EVO crowd for the same reasons you stated.

    Re: Odd staggered question

I would never put reverse staggered tires on my car. Get some H&R sways and maybe a used sport suspension package. If I come off the off ramp a little too fast I can slide the back out if I want to. I'm going to start conducting drift tests on my snow tires/17" combo I have on right now.
