    Cooling fan issue

    Alright I need some help. My cooling fan has been turning on by itself while it's sitting in the driveway. Needless to say it keeps killing my battery. Any idea what the problem is?

    fan control module is shot, or ur temp sensor is shot.

    Never had that problem, but when I removed the Climate Control unit while doing some interior "renovation", my fans were working non-stop as long as I drive. Removing the fuse would not help.

    I guess your best immediate bet is to disconnect the battery every time you stop till you find the problem.

    Alright, well this may be a stupid question but, since we're into the winter months. How often would that even turn on to cool the engine. What if I just disconnected it until I get it fixed? It sounds like a bad idea but, technically would it work?

    Am no expert, but I do know my fans still work after a long or spirited drive, even when its really cold outside. I would not think about disconnecting them, just not worth the risk...

    Just tighten the negative battery cable a way that you can easily connect/disconnect it easily. I know, its a PITA.

    isn't there a problem with warner getting into the ecu box and causing this problem?
    I would open up e ecu and check that first.

    HHHmmmm. Can you clarify this a bit and maybe point me in the right direction? ECU box is under the hood closest to the windsheild on the driver's side right?

    check the fuse could cause this as well, also check the engine management fuses.

    Ok, so last night i pulled the radiator fan fuse and left it over night to see what happens. I get in this morning and sure enough it started no problem. I guess i can ghetto it and pull the fuse whenever i stop until i get it fixed...sucks! The mechanic says it needs to go to the stealership to get a diagnostic done to figure out the problem. This was my exact answer to him...."F**k that!!". Anyway, do you still think that it has anything to do with water in the ECU? Where are the engine management fuses? Thanks guys!

    Replacing the engine coolant temperature sensor did it for me when I had the same problem. DIY and it's a part that's <$10 from dealership.

    12/23/09 - My car has been phenomenal to me. Runs strong. Don't think I'm ever going to sell it. Rather throw $7k into it for a refresh than buy a new A4 that has no dipstick.
    12/5/10 - 100k miles & counting!
    9/22/13 - 146k+ & running strong w/a new TB, water pump, etc.

    dealers are highway robbers they wanted to charge me $150 to diagnose the issue and then charge me to fix it. Any mechanic that tells u it has to go to the dealer is a bone head.

    i might have had the same issue as you but my fans only started right after i started the car, they never stayed on after i pulled the key off.

    anyway, on mine, i tried the general suggestions--brought it to a local shop that did audis. with the switches and other items replaced, it still came back. they eventually flushed my radiator and they told me that mine was pretty cruddy in there and caused the fans to kick off. after the flush i had no issues. just thought i'd add that in. mine started to get funky after about 70k or so and radiator was never flushed prior to that.
