To air-box or not to air-box..

That is the question... lol. Just curious if you guys have come across this or have REALLY given it some thought. I did some searching, and I have info from previous modding, and general knowledge... However, do you guys think it is better to just get a K&N for the stock air-box (which is still somewhat restrictive), or have a short-ram intake with an engine bay heat shield to deflect some of the excess heat? I'm sure there isn't a huge gain to having the short-ram intake, but idk... I don't know if I want to just go get a K&N and put my air-box back in, or just try and find a heat shield of some kind. I've been looking for a week now, and haven't seen very many. The ones I have seen are for the 1.8t's and have cutouts made for them. Since I have the 3.0, it wouldn't really work. Either way, let me know what you guys really think.

^^ apparently the stock airbox does it's job the best is what i keep hearing. It's pretty unanimous actually. The general consensus is that aftermarket intakes are purely for entertainment, because of the beautiful sound they make.

This is true after finishing installing my carbonio my car seemed noticably slower. but the sound it makes with an aftermarket DV is amazing so i keep it on lol not to mention that it makes your engine bay look clean as hell.

Open the airbox and strip it. That's out all the stuff in there from that cone filter cap to the foam on the bottom. And then put a k&n and be happy

if it's true or not i honestly don't know, but i hear a intake on a 3.0 makes more of a difference then the 1.8t, just something to think about. again, that might not be true, just what i have heard.
Wasn't more then a month ago someone just installed one, might want to search back a little bit.

Personally i rock a stripped stock airbox with a K&N on my stage 3 1.8t

Re: To air-box or not to air-box..

Ok... I only paid like, 60 bucks for all the tubing and the filter of the short-ram intake, so it's not like I'm out a whole lot if I go back. The K&N filter is about the same price. I had done some research before hand, and I had heard that the stock box did a pretty decent job, but I figure if I had a bigger intake tube and a less restrictive filter, then I should be adding a pony or two and slightly better responsiveness. Maybe now that I've gotten used to how the car feels now, I'll put the stock stuff back and see if there is a difference. I just registered the car and got plates for it tonight, so I'm fucking broke, but I'll get a K&N in a couple weeks, once I get paid.

Re: To air-box or not to air-box..

because you have a naturally aspirated car, I would say that a cold air intake and or a cone filter would be a good upgrade... not many power but a step in the good way...
The other thing I'll say is that your not concerned by all that heatshiel stufff, engine bay temp and all because you dont have the very hot turbo just beside the airbox as we do on our 1.8t

My opinion is go ahead with yous stuff and enjoythe new look and sound!
