    Attempting DIY Paint Job

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
After hitting a tree branch, I've decided I'm gonna do a lot of things myself to fix it.

    I need to know

    1. How to prep the hood (Steel)
    -Sand paper grit

    2. How to fill in the dent
-Bondo type (A4Rob gave me link for that, I'm just verifying)
    -How to sand the Bondo
    -Grit for surfacing bondo

    --Anything in between I'm missing--

    3. Primer
-Which primer I need (Link here would be great
    -Sanding details

***X2 on S4 bumper which is not steel

Then I'll worry about paint later. I might do that professionally.
And please don't try to talk me out of it. I think it's worth it because I have two body panels to do. So if anyone knows anything, please chip in.

Also, I found this: Painting bumper

    Re: Attempting DIY Paint Job

It depends on the current state of the hood.
Does it currently have paint on it?

Hood has a 4"X3" dent. No matter what, it has to be filled in.

AP - - I PM'd you. Great info. Thanks. Where is the best place to collect all the material?

    Re: Attempting DIY Paint Job

for your hood, first off make sure it is clean.

1 .get some good wax remover from automotive paint dealer. wax remover, nitrille gloves, clean rags.
sand paper assortment, sanding block, sanding board. sanding board paper assortment. bondo, and spreaders. get plenty of sandpaper

clear coat, base color, sealer primer, and high build primer. tell the guys what you are spraying and they will recommend the right amount of material.

    2. mask appropriate areas, better yet pull the hood have a buddy help.

    3. wipe hood down well in one direction with the rag/waxer remover.

    4. get some 32o grit sand paper, (do you have a Dual action)? if so 330 grit paper for it and sand hood. sand through clear and base color.

    5. clean with wax remover again, or acetone (has high flash rate) >evaporates fast<

    6. take bondo mix little dime or nickel size hardener to bondo. better to start with too little hardener and add more if needed. too much hardener will set up to fast on you. mix up really well with metal putty knife. apply in one direction firmly with spreader, use a large spreader @4 or 5'' long.

Buy assortment of sand paper. 8x11 sheets and the long ones schucks sells 3m long board paper, so get assortments and get plenty.

    Sanding
7,sand bondo with block sander, try 150 at first. if it doesnt cut then use coarser and then go to higher grit. if it is a long scratch/dent, see if you can get a longboard sanding tool ( about a foot long with handles on top clip sand paper to bottom) use this, a block sander will make little waves and divits that you wont see untill the damn paint is on... trust me i have re painted panels that i thought looked good.

    PRIMER
    8. once your dent or scratch is gone: primer with sealer primer. if your work looks good to you then you may proceed with High Build Primer

    9. lay high build on heavy on area you worked on and feather outward.
    let dry
    10. now you can wet sand the whole thing.. start with 800 for the high build area and 1000 or 1500 for the entire thing when done with the high build.
now is when you really need to look for any waves or problems. scratches make sure you go over with water and sandpaper starting with 600 or 8oo up to 1000 and 1500.

11.Important! Dry off and blow dry with compressed air, dry it off completely..

    12. wipe down quickly with acetone let dry or flash off, mix paint and allow it to dry.

    13. spray with color! practice on a wall or better yet, an old car door or body part.

    14. spray hood on all the edges first.

    15. start at drivers side of hood on the edge and work your way toward center. run to other side and start in the middle (where you left off) and work your way to back to the passenger side. (doing so avoids flash marks.)

This is from Okar. I am in the process of gathering materials and have 2 more weeks left of school. More input is appreciated and I will post pics (when I get a chance) of the process.
