    flywheel bolts???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i would like to hear from anyone who has changed their own clutch and also went with a single mass lightweight flywheel... i'm in the process but before i start tearing down, i want to have all the correct hardware. i'm told that flywheel bolts have to be shorter for a lightweight smf.. first i want to let ya kno that it is an XTD stage 3 kit w/ 12lb smf and cant get any info from the manufacturer, trust me, i've tried. i kno the stock diameter, pitch, and length that is 22.5mm. but is there a general length that can be used??? like maybe a 20mm?? if needed i can measure the thickness of the flywheel hub and if anyone knows the thickness of a factory dmf hub, maybe it can be compared that way... anyone help out??? dont want to get the car taken apart and then be screwed when i cant get the bolts... any help is appreciated.. TIA!! oh yeah, b6 1.8tq 5mt

    Re: flywheel bolts???

If you're installing a aluminum FW you probably need the bolts that a B5A4 or Passat uses.

    Re: flywheel bolts???

but how far into the crank do the factory crank bolts on an OEM setup go into the crank?? because if we're talkin about a difference in flywheels of 3-5mm and they thread into the crank 3/4 of an inch, that gives me some room to play...

    Re: flywheel bolts???

That can't be right. I had to buy bolts for my alum. FW because my stock ones were to short. I got them from a Passat IIRC, but I believe there was a year split. If you can get them in 3/4", you'll be fine. Don't forget a lil' loctite.

    Re: flywheel bolts???

So you can't use OEM flywheel bolts for a lightweight flywheel?

    Re: flywheel bolts???

according to MJMautohaus, the flywheel bolts are m10x1x22.3.... ecs has them as m10x1x22.5... those are both for OEM spec... does anyone happen to have access to an OEM spec flywheel that could tell me the thickness of the hub where the bolts go through?? i think then i could more easily measure my flywheel hub thickness and determine a bolt size then..

    Re: flywheel bolts???

Buy the flywheel and clutch kit from Unorthodox Racing- it comes with EVERYTHING- including new FW bolts, alignment tool etc.

12 lbs lighter than OE, excellent quality, great company to deal with, feels great (like adding 20 hp).

    Re: flywheel bolts???

i think an 18-20mm length will be good... just need to find the correct head....are they the tripple square or hex?? i just changed my crank pulley and went from the hex head to a reg 13mm head and realized that they are hex for a reason. if they are the triple squares then a reg 13mm head should be alright.... hmmmmm autozone here i come... sound good to you??

That can't be right.. are you sure that's not the pressure plate bolts? 14mm sounds awfully short, 16 isnt much better.

EDIT nm M8 is too big for the pp. Still seems too short IMO. Im going to see if I have any at my house to see how long they are.

    Re: flywheel bolts???

now the question is is it m8 or m10??

AudiA4_20T says they are m8... MJM autohaus says m10... i'm on the phone right now w/ audi to see what size oem bolts are... audi says flywheel to crank bolts for b6 1.8tq are m10x1x22.3... that is factory spec from audi...so all i need to do is figure on the correct length that i need... and i believe an 18mm length will work as it is only 4mm shorter and with a thinner flywheel, the depth that the bolt goes into the crank will be less than the 4mm shorter than a stock bolt... now.. are they hex head or are they normal bolt head??

I have factory B6 1.8T flywheel bolts in my basement. I will measure them next weekend when I am home and post up.
