Amsoil users, is Dominator racing oil worth the $$$

I'm a big fan of Amsoil, but I've never ran the Dominator 'Racing Oil' before...I always assumed they just had the one fully synthetic oil. Just wondering if anyone here has experience with this stuff. All my experience is with bikes, I've never run amsoil in a car before. This will be my first oil change on the S4.

Our cars come off the factory line with Pentosin (Pentosynth) oil in the crank case. (5w40)
This is the oil of choice for me.
amsoil is also really good oil but its hard to come by and hella expensive

I run ELF/Total 5.40.... Great oil. Blackstone labs to prove it!

I buy it online from www.rapidparts.com

Amsoil makes good oil. Imo, I would run the DEO 5w40 over the AFL 5w40. You don't need a 505.01 that initially shears down a thinner oil.

its a company that does analysis of oil from all types of engines and sends you a report of wear items, chemicals and minerals in the engine and if there is any traces of coolant in your oil. Basically its a blood diagnoses for your engine.

i ordered 7 quarts of 10W30 today (ATM)...i read somewhere that the smaller the ratio between the two numbers, the better the oil (lower ratio means less polymer additives, which in turn means less breakdown over time). ATM also had one of the best shear viscosities, at least out of the brands that i could find specs on.

is anyone here running a 10W30? i live in cali so this car never sees below freezing temps

that used to matter in dino oil.. but with todays synthetics it dosent. Unless, of course, you live between 6-12,000 rpm and 300+degree oil temps.

you shouldn't be using a 30w oil in your german car, it would have been smarter to get a 40W oil, espically since you live in cali, where you frequently see high temps. I would go so far to say that you're attempt to reduce breakdown will acutaly have the opposite effect since the 30W oil will breakdown far more quickly than the 40W will on hot days, and espically since you own a naturaly hot running engine that's also cooling and oiling 2 turbo-chargers. you should be fine for the winter.. but I would suggest switching in the spring or when it begins to get warmer.

good to know, thanks man! i forgot to mention that this will be strictly a winter oil. as soon as springtime comes around i'll throw in the 5W40 'Euro' oil from Amsoil...not sure what makes it specific to Euro cars, other than the fact that it's a 5W40

amsoil claims their euro oil meets or exceeds vw specifications, along with some others like bmw and merc.. but it's not acutaly 'approved' of anything and is no different from their regular formulation, other than it's a 5-40w oil and it says european forumla on the bottle.

Re: Amsoil users, is Dominator racing oil worth the $$$

I've made my opinion known about oil that is sold out of some guys garage who has a bunch on stickers on the back of his truck saying to buy amsoil and his phone number.

Racing oils usually don't have a very good detergent package since they are only used for a day of racing and then drained. Whats really hard on engine oil is the constant heat-cycling from the engine warming up and cooling down, race oils typically aren't designed to handle this and therefor i would recommend using 5w40 synthetic oil of a non-racing variety.

That line is a little outdated. The newer VAG oil specs, ie VW504 (which basically covers all existing gasoline specs) is a 5w30 oil.

certainly not, changing viscosities is actually better if you chose an oil better suited to the weather the car will be operated in, for example, if you are operating your car in alaska, a 0w oil would perform better there than a 5w oil, minimizing engine wear slightly.

mixing oils used to cause computability problems (the synthetic oil the nazi's used in WWII would swell oil seals), but nowdays its not an issue, every oil bottle you see will say on the back "compatible with synthetic and conventional oils" or something to that extent.

so you want less weight in colder conditions? So like 5w40 in the summer and 0w40 in the winter?

Just because it's new dosent mean it's ideal. The newer engine blocks are made from a harder material and as such will wear well even with thinner oil.

If you're talking about ideal.... there is a lot of talk in the RS4/RS6 community (not much on AZ) that says VW spec oils suck, and the best performing one (on the street & on the race track) is Renewable Lubrication Inc HD SHP 5w40

that sounds interesting, I'm always open to better oils and I'll have to look into bio-oil.
