Which timing belt kit do i need? I searched

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I searched and came up with a couple kits, i have heard bad things about the ECS kit. What is the best kit, i want all the seals and do i need to use VW/Audi G12 coolant? I just want to make sure i have all the proper seals. Some sites say they only come with 1 seal for the water pump and other kits say they include 3 seals. Any help would be appreciated, what kits did you guys use that have replaced the timing belt. I need to order this today so i need help quick!!

As far as where you get the kit that's up to you, but unless your crank/camshaft seals are leaking currently I wouldn't mess with them (I know this from experience of a now leaking cam seal). Just get a kit with them to replace in the future encase the start to leak (those two seals are the difference between the 1 and 3 seal kits). I got my get from ECS but they are all pretty much the same. Make sure the water pump has metal blades, the timing/serpentine belt is made by continental, and the tensioner pulley is the most recent update: part #06109243E.

Here is a link to a different website if you are not wanting to go with ECS:

I just did my timing belt this weekend and I used the MJM kit. It's one of the cheapest out there, has free shipping and comes with everything you need.

Shipping was fast too. I had everything on my door in 5 business days (and I ordered quite a bit more than just the timing belt kit).

Water pump should come with one on it, at least the OEM ones do

I think the PureMS one is the best, its super cheap and uses all OEM, not the ECS chinese junk. Make sure you add a bottle of coolant in there also

Belt lengths are usually printed on the belt. 2005 Models have an accessory belt length of 1590mm. This Audi accessory belt drives the alternator, power steering pump and fan clutch.

Re: Which timing belt kit do i need? I searched

Hi guys, I hope I'm not veering too much off topic but I figured I'd post this question here since there was already a timing belt thread on the front page.

I just got told by my dealer that I've got a little crack or some such thing in my timing belt and they recommended replacing it. Of course they wanted to charge a rather ridiculous 1330 bucks for it! I called around and another shop quoted me 623 (~5-6 hours labor) for parts and labor to replace just the timing belt. It seems like that's a fair price. However, the guy did mention that a lot of people get a bunch of other things done during a timing belt job. He threw out terms like "rollers", "tensioners" and "seals" and said that with those included the price would most likely be ~1000. From the look of the kits that people are posting, would these be the tension idler/dampner and crank/camshaft seal? If so, wouldn't those be necessary in a timing belt job? Does 1000dollars sound reasonable?

Another shop in the area quoted me 8 hours labor at 95/hr and that was without parts.

It kills me to pay that much but I'm planning on driving up from San Diego to San Fransisco for Christmas (~500 miles) and don't want any problems.

Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

Re: Which timing belt kit do i need? I searched

Hey, thanks for the response! :)

I wish I could get it done up in LA (way more places to choose from and most likely better rates) but unfortunately I just don't/didn't have the time for that. I was traveling all this week and can't drive up this weekend and needed to have the work done before I drive up to SF next Friday. So I ended up making an appointment with the shop that quoted me 623 for the job and purchasing a kit on my own from PureMS (gotta support the local guys).

Of course I fully expect to pay more than that once they get in there (the quote was for timing belt only, didn't include seals, etc.) but I'm hoping it isn't too much more. If I can get everything done for under 900 I'll be happy enough.
