So anyone have a heater in their garage? Been looking at some, so I don't freeze my nuts off in the winter washing/detailing the car..

    Re: Heater for garages?

i got a dinky little space heater in my garage, keeps the temp around 17 degrees.
most effective thing to do is dress warm and don't leave the door open for too long.

I don't understand...does it snow in your garage? Missing the roof? If not, why are you cleaning the car off in the garage?

Or is it missing a door? If not, why is it freezing your nuts off?

My garage is attached to the house and is about 10-12 degrees Celsius when I get in the car in the morning mid-winter. I never have to clean the car off...because it's in the garage.

    see my confusion?

I've asked a few people about heating the garage, and apparently the big pain in the ass is the doors...the garage doors have to be insulated, and are effing expensive if they are.

He's looking to wash his car in the garage during the winter...not clean it off. At least that's how I read his thread...

To the poster - saw a nice one (specific to garages) at Costco a couple weeks ago. Can't find it on the web-site or in store anymore. It was around $115. Keep your eyes open and you might get lucky.

    Re: Heater for garages?

for cold weather work in the garage, enough to break the chill, I just have a 1500W electric heater.

I've tried a propane heater, which works great (attaches directly to a BBQ tank), but I wouldn't trust it un-attended for any length of time.

The electric heater at least has a thermostat, and tip sensor, that I'm comfortable leaving on it's own while I go in and take a piss or grab another beer.

My parent's neighbour burned the entire house down with an unattended propane heater... Most of the electric ones have auto shutdowns if something goes sideways.

does it really matter what my intention for the heater was? I just wanted to know about what others might be using in their garage..if they do any work, as per my example, detailing a car inside the garage in the winter... i guess the term clean is really confusing

i know the problems of trying to completely climate control a garage, and that's not what I'm aiming for anyways...just wanted to see some options and experience between, propane/electric/water heaters...

    as for others who replied..thanks
    Cheers!

    Re: Heater for garages?

I personally would stay away from the propane heaters, letting propane run while the room heats up doesn't really sound like the safest thing imo

I just use an electrical space heater just make sure that your circuit in your garage can handle the heater if your thinking about getting something more "heavy duty", I've blown a few fuse's while the heater was running and some other sort of device was running at the same time (i.e. Vacuum), Again i wouldn't leave any sort of heater unattended a neighbor a few houses down burnt this whole house and 2 cars to a crisp cuz of heater in the garage.

I know a couple people that use this model. It apparently works rather well. Can be bought at Home Depot for $300.00

    Re: Heater for garages?

ahhh...sorry mate. I'm blind. I thought you were asking how to keep warm (in your garage) while cleaning snow off your car...which made my head spin.

anyway, how cold is your garage in the winter? Is it seperate? Could get real cold that way. Space heater might do the trick if your garage isn't massive...but not one of those tiny little ones...I reckon you'd need one the size of a guitar amp to make any impact on a double garage.

let us know if you find anything worthwhile...

it's attached to the house, for some our garage has always been excessively cold.. i had this issue where my RNS-E would not play any sound if it was too cold out(below -8 ish), and i've had many occasions where that happened...
another reason is when I get my winters wheels put on, I'd have to clean my summers when I get home.. and these RGRs are bitching to clean ... so it could take a while..and that gets cold too.. anyways, I was in PMS mode, don't mind me

I'm actually staying away from propane as some already warned...
that one from home depot looks interesting.. i'll see how that works out...
    Cheers!

i do...my garage is usually 24 celsius..i have those fan heaters, not those radiators...my heater heats up the garage very fast and very hot.

    Re: Heater for garages?

Another negative to the propane heater that I forgot to mention was the potential for CO (carbon monoxide) - unless you are cracking open that garage door for fresh air, which will be cold, which kinda defeats the purpose of the heater in the first place!

    Re: Heater for garages?

Climate controlled garage, i like the sound of that!

-8 sounds pretty damn cold, an insulated door is just a regular door with pieces of styrophoam high density insulation on the back of it, something you could easily do yourself, add a lip to seal the sides of the door and it would make a world of difference. Unless its alredy all insulated and the only reason its cold because it dosn't have a heater.

is that RNS-E factory? or did you buy/install it afterwards.

p.s. that's a great looking A4. How'd you get away with no front plate? I tried it when I got my S4, but I got pulled over 3 times in 2 months. Third was a $100 ticket. That was the end of that!

    Re: Heater for garages?

I've used the propane heaters (attach to BBQ tank style) for years with great success. I would NEVER leave it alone - and you do need to infuse some fresh air after 2-3 hours - but it does a great job heating my 2 car garage that has a very high ceiling. (Virtually a loft which is used for storage of spare parts etc)

I've done hours and hours of work in the garage this way in all weather. Wearing a set coveralls - I've been toasty.

car came with everything..but I didnt like the RNS-E and i went aftermarket after

as far as plate..i havent had any trouble *knocks on wood* ... we'll see what happen.. but to be honest with the s6 leds now.. i think no plate is a bad idea..attracts too much attention...but i'll take my chances till something happen

back on topic..the garage has been resealed from years of wearr...going to finally paint our garage after living here for 10 years...considering doing some minor insulation work.. finally heating it a bit later..
    Cheers!
