I have a 97 a4 1.8TQ 5 speed that i just put a new head on. After everything was assembled i filled the cooling system with water and let it idle for a while. Then i drained the water out and replaced it with the proper coolant. I also changed the oil and filter. Then i let it idle for a while longer while the air bled out of the new coolant. As i went to pull the car back into the shop for the night the oil light came on. So after i got it into the shop, i checked the oil and it was fine. The light went off. The next day i drove it down the road. Everything was fine while i was cruising at 55 in 5th. No light on. Then i came to a few traffic lights. I accelerated hard from both of them. Then the oil light came on and the lifters got noisy. I pulled over and checked the oil again. Everything seemed fine, so i started the car up again. After a few sec of idling the light went off and the lifters quieted down, so i started to drive it back to the shop. Everything was fine until i came to another light and accelerated away from it. The light came back on and the lifters got noisy again. So once i got up to 5th and kept goin at a steady pace the light went off again and everything got quiet. I got the car back to the shop. Tomorrow i will hook an oil pressure gauge up to see what the pressures are. My question is why do i lose pressure above idle. In my experience when an oil pump goes, you lose pressure at idle. What would cause me to lose pressure above idle and be fine at idle?
