    Curbed the USP pretty hard!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright so i recently switched from my RS4's back to the S4's for the winter, and lately i have been doing some risky shit, pushing the car to its limits seeing what can of turns i can take etc. So far i know this baby can drift pretty damn good and ive gotten real good at it...

However 2 nights ago i tried to take a quick shortcut behind a local Giant Eagle to catch up to my buddies down the road, and took a turn i knew i could take but didnt notice a wet spot in the turn until it was too late :(.

I hit the curb pretty hard, halfway into the turn, with my drivers side front rim! I didnt care about the wheels since im refinishing them in the spring time anyways, however i noticed the car starting to pull to the left. The steering wheel is slightly off, not terrible, but it does pull.

I got out and looked at the wheel the next morning and noticed it looks funny, on top of it having a positive camber, i noticed it is set pretty far back ( having a bigger gap between the tire and the bumper and hardly any gap between the tire and the door). The wheel rubs when i take a sharp right turn as well.

I am hoping that all i need is an alignment to resolve this issue, but i have a feeling it might be a little more than that, maybe even a bent axle???

Anyways here is a pic my buddy took today to show you the wheel gap!

Looks like your gonna need more than an alignment. Looks as if you were turning in the pic, pretty noticeble gap.. GL

Yeah, that looks like far more than an alignment. Better take the wheel off and see what kind of damage you've done. I don't know how comfortable I'd be driving on that either till I knew exactly what was wrong. Better save the drifting for the track.

haha funny thing is it didnt happen while i was trying to drift, just tried to take a hard turn on what i thought was dry pavement, but o well shit happens. I've already driven like 250 miles the way it is...havent had time or the place to take a look at it since i had to come back to school after thanksgiving

You more than likely bent your control arms. Not cheap, even as a DIY. Get it fixed before you damage more of your suspension components. Take it easy on the streets, although I have done similar damage to my cars when I was MUCH younger

i'd guess your control arm is bent and possible sub-frame damage. you may not notice any vibrations or pulling but your turning radius is probably not as good. GL

Upper control arms are cheap. Looks like you bent something. Axle would cause vibration so it's not that.

Re: Curbed the USP pretty hard!

I looked up the control arms on ECS and they are'nt that expensive so i hope its nothign more than that.

Do you really think there might be sub frame damage? I kind of find that unlikely but i hope to god there isnt.

I also decided to get some lowering springs, which ones are the best to get? Ive seen the Eibachs and H&R's....how much will those lower it with the sport/usp suspension?

audi is going to say you have a damaged radiator support, you need new cats, your wheel is bent, your axle is bad, your tie rod arm is bent, your control arms are bent, and you need to flush the power steering system.

hahah yea i know how most dealerships are. However the sales guy i bought my car from recently became the service manager and he's a really cool guy. I know what to be looking for so they wont be able to fool me, all im gonna get is an alignment...there is no way im gonna have them do anymore than that.

lowering wise, it really depends on what you want. If you want adjustability and have the money, then get some coilovers. If not, look into the Eibach pro system or a Bilstein/H&R combo, they seem to be most popular and give a nice ride.

if you don't have the money to do it all at once - you've got bigger stuff to worry about. fixing that won't be cheap - i almost guarantee a lower control arm with the positive camber and that much caster. you're gonna have to pay for that + it'd be a good idea to do upper control arms too + you'll have to get an alignment after all that.

and worst case scenario you have to have a total front sub-frame shift because the above doesn't totally center things up.

if you were to set your steering wheel totally straight (car on) and then get out and look at your wheels - is your passenger side wheel straight as well? or is it turned some?

if it sits straight too - you may need tie rods as well. so plan for that too....

not trying to come down real hard on you, but i do this kind of repair fairly often at work and it won't be cheap no matter where you take it. your best bet is to do as much replacement yourself as possible and then take it for an alignment.

sorry to be mean i push my car to the limits as well but never on turns, and what were u thinking? i'm sorry but dude this is no drift car, this is no Torreno or Silvia, and i don't care what u say if u were good at drifting u would've been able to correct the slide almost instantly u had enough grip. Once again sorry to hear u probably really damaged ur control arms and alignment adjusters, and it might cost quite a bit to fix sorry about that, but u kinda sorta deserved what happened, because u pulled an absurd move, not that i don't at times but i know where to stop.

like i said before, this didnt happen while i was trying to drift or mess around, i took a turn i knew i could take, in dry weather conditions, however it was dark out and half way into the turn i hit a wet spot that cause my front end to slide out into the curb ahead. This is the first time i've ever encountered something like this, and i do alot of risky shit. I know the cars limits, and wouldnt push it beyond a point i knew i wouldnt be able to control, shit happens sometimes. if you dont think this car can drift (in the rain or snow) then you are so wrong, this car has lots of potential and you can get the back end out as easy as a rwd car, with the advantage of being able to keep it going longer as well as controling it better!!

I would not drive it as much untill you get it looked at. The parts in their are cast aluminum and as they can bend they are also really common to just breaking. Last thing you want is a wheel in your fender and possible a wreck.

Re: Curbed the USP pretty hard!

haha wish the headlights were of some use, i was already in the turn, had no where to go to save myself. i go autocrossing often, but its off season time right now. but yea i'll be more carful next time, this was the first and hopefully the last time it happens.

btw im gonna do it myself, part is only $160 from ecs.....if i had audi do it, it would have been $580!
