Best place to buy B6 1.8T fuel pump and filter?

I think my fuel pump crapped out today- tell me if this sounds like it to you..

I have been hearing some humming coming from the back seat area of the car for a while though, and I know that is the fuel pump or filter.. now for the last few days the engine has been feeling moderately weak, and it also doesnt sound too healthy, just feels like it is running rough. Today, I was on my way to Ikea, and I stopped at a traffic light, the car started to idle funny, no CEL yet. Once the light turned green, i tried to go and even with my foot pegged to the floor the car would barely move at all. I noticed that my gas light was on ( somehow didnt notice that before ) so I pulled in to a Shell station that was less than a block away. Put in some gas, then i started the car and it still idled funny, and a CEL came on ( solid CEL, not flashing ). I shut the car off then tried to turn it back on, and the engine would crank with no problem but the car never starts. I had to call AAA and get them to tow it to a service center.

Sound like the fuel pump to you? The car has 59k miles on it, pump and filter have never been changed to my knowledge

That being said, where is the best/cheapest place to buy a Fuel Pump and Filter?
I've moved on from Audi to more fun, more lightweight, and more reliable products. These vehicles are so unreliable that I have been able to purchase 3 other cars in just the 6 months I have been without an Audi, due to savings alone. Other than the interiors, it won't be missed. Make a product that can hang with a spec miata in the corners, while not breaking every day past 50k miles, then look me up. Until then, you and your wack coilpacks and $37 dollar wipers can go right to hell.

Have you scanned the car for codes? What are the codes that your CEL is talking to you about?

When my fuel filter was clogged I had to have my foot pegged just to get the car to move. Upon replacing the fuel filter things were all good again. I did not see any CEL or the car did not act erratically like you are describing.

Start with the fuel filter. If that fixes things then good. If not, then consider a fuel pump.

Fuel filter can be had at any dealership or talk to Shawn (a4ringedone8t) since he's somewhere in FL near you (I think, I still can't get distances right in that state).

I have not scanned codes yet, this all just happened about 2 hours ago. The car is now at the AAA service center, which is closed until tomorrow morning.

Shawn's shop is a few hundred miles away haha.. on the other side of the state, i would totally go there if i was closer.

Try to start the car again and if it doesnt start then pop the hood and push the shrader valve on the back of the fuel rail to see if fuel sprays out of it. IF fuel doesnt come spraying out then you dont have good fuel pressure/no fuel which would be caused by the fuel pump not turning on or workiing properly.

If you dont know what im talking about it is at the very end of the fuel rail on the back side and there should be a cap on it unless it has been lost. It is like the valve to put air in your tires just bigger since it is the size of the fuel rail.

And to put it out there, if you decide to buy a fuel pump I have a practically brand new pump that I had replaced by Audi for the 2003 fuel pump recall. I had it installed shortly before buying a performance pump since I needed a high flowing pump for the power I make. I will sell it to you for $150 if you are interested. They cost $276 from GenuineAudiparts or probably double that from the dealer.

Thanks, I know the valve you are talking about, i just never knew what it did.. i've seen the valve stem cap looking thing under the hood and wondered what it was for..

I will have the shop try that tomorrow, i'm at home now and the car is at the AAA service center..

If i need a fuel pump, i will absolutely drop you a line, i want to keep this as cheap as possible, i'm in the middle of moving to a new apartment and i totally can't afford expensive repairs this month!

I tapped on my pump a few times and the car fired up and died. I ended up with a pump, gasket and filter from my local dealer for $240

Hope ur tank isn't full like mine was!

Will the Quattro filter fit on a FWD car? is there a difference for that particular part?

My tank is probably about half full..

Fuel level in the tank shouldn't matter when changing the filter. There's a DIY in our B6 A4 DIY forum up top on your screen.

If you wind up changing the pump make sure you're 1/4 tank or less. It'll be 10x easier.

Re: Best place to buy B6 1.8T fuel pump and filter?

So the AAA shop is trying to say the issue is actually my timing belt..

    This makes no sense..

Would my car crank at all if my timing belt was snapped or damaged? I actually popped off the upper timing belt cover on Saturday ( before the car broke down ) and it looked perfect.

Do the symptoms I described sound anything like timing belt issues?

Could be, the car will crank and not fore if the timing belt is damaged...

It takes about 2 seconds to remove the cover and see the damaged belt...most of the time when the belt goes...they valves are screwed.

Fuel Filter part # is 8E0 201 511G for Frontrash 511J for Quattro if you want to try fixing it yourself with just a filter from the dealer. I can send you one and you will have it next day as well

What did they say to you regarding the timing belt?

The guy said the belt is either snapped or damaged and he thinks the engine " self destructed".. this makes no sense to me, and I am going to go and check out the car myself in a couple of hours. If this was the case, why did it just feel like the car lost power slowly at a traffic light without any weird/harsh/loud noises associated with that? ( I assume the timing belt snapping and the engine destroying itself would make at least SOME noise )

On Saturday when I was checking my coilpacks and doing other routine maintenance, i pulled off the upper timing belt cover and everything looked intact. I am no Audi Timing Belt expert or anything, but i saw no damage, nothing that would cause me any degree of alarm. The car does have 59k miles on it though..

Shawn, I just sent you a PM

Question: What red flags should I look for when inspecting the timing belt?

If the timing belt snapped then the car wouldnt run since the cams wouldn't be able to turn to open and close the valves in order for the 4 stroke cycle of the engine to work and your pistons would have also slammed the valves. You need to get to the car and check the fuel pressure like I said first off.

I will be going to the shop shortly and I will test the fuel pressure like you said, i will post the results later.

The best way would be to have a fuel pressure gauge. There may still be fuel up there at the rail but not enough pressure for the engine to run correctly. It should be around 55psi

The timing belt could have jumped teeth killing your powerband as the head and block were then out of time and finally broke which stopped everything. Who knows, look at it first hand and let us know what you see. Youll know with one glance if its the timing belt
