Thinking about the GIAC chip for my 2.8

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm thinking about getting my 2.8 chipped with the GIAC chip.

I've been reading around on various chip options and I think this is going to be the one I go with. I do have a few questions.

#1 Has any one had any dealings with Toms Foreign Autoparts? I found them selling used AHA ECUs on ebay. I'd like to buy a second ECU so I can still drive to work instead of driving my truck that I have to stop with the handbrake

#2 I assume swapping to a spare ECU is just like resetting one, just without the stepping on the brakes? Is there anything special I need to do after swapping to the spare? I head something about doing a TB Adaption deal or is that just after boring your TB?

    /newbquestions

i have an extra 30v ecu. pm me if you might want it.
nothing special needs to be done when swapping. TB adaptation never hurts tho

I don't know if anyone will flame me for this advice. But since you have a 2.8, I would just go with whatever is cheapest. If you ever heard of Speedtuning, might want to look into them (not one bad complaint yet). Since you are not expected to gain more than 15hp, I would not even waste the extra money that would yeild the same gains.

Yea I'm not expecting much if any power gains and I've head of SPeedtuning, I've done a bit of reading ;)

However if it gives me a bit better throttle response and a bit of a nicer powerband I'm down to spend a few bones.

Another question too, could prolly search and will after I post this ;) I see the GIAC chip increases your rev limiter to 7100, but what is really a normal safe number for stock heads?
    **edit**
Eh silly question, who cares no more power to be made up there anyway.

Yeah, I noticed that the GIAC is $250 for the 2.8. Not bad at all. I was going to comment about the rev limiter, but you already beat me to it. More than likely, you will not be eyeing the tach anyways, unless you are the type to test the limit of your vehicle. I have my rev limiter raised also, and still shift according to the feel.

With GIAC its alot easier too, because its a simple reflash instead of sending some guy your ecu and not being able to drive for 2 weeks.

There's tons of places that are GIAC dealers too.

I don't believe the 2.8 GIAC chip is a reflash. I believe they solder the chip in, that's why they never do installs at waterfest.
AWE asks you to bring the car to them after the show back at their shop to do the install.

Alright if you say so. They told me specifically the solder it. Either way I don't care cause I no longer have a 2.8.

Re: Thinking about the GIAC chip for my 2.8

Yeahhh I guess we're both right because when I first looked at chips for the 2.8 it was a few years ago and there was no flashloader back then so I guess the 2.8 chip is a little different now.

looking to buy a GIAC chip too but no money to spare for now. As far as Tom's Foreign Auto, i've bought a few things from them (small stuff - MAF, sidemarkers, instrument cluster, and a few parts for my old maxima) and its always been quality parts, fast shipping, and good customer service.

Speedtuning is said to have way better gains, look for reviews on audiforums.com

What we should do is all pitch in and buy a flashloader. Just send it to each other and program it to 93 performance or whatever.
